Short Story

United States

My name is Waseem Haroun, I am 19 years old. I once dreamed of becoming an engineer and was about to start university but everything collapsed on October 7th.

Today, I live alone in Gaza, far from my family who took refuge in Egypt. My home was destroyed and the street I used to play on is now rubble. Every day I face hunger, fear, and loneliness with nothing but the sound of planes and explosions around me.

Living through a war separated from your family, means sleeping with fear and waking up wishing it was all just a nightmare. No one hears the cries of your heart. No one is there to comfort you when you break down.

I feel like an old man trapped in a young body. But despite the pain, I’m still holding on to life. I don’t want to die—I just want to live, to learn, and to reunite with my family who once told me “We want to see you become an engineer”

Please help me survive. Help me return to life as a human being not just another number in this war.
