Help Reunite a Family Torn Apart by ICE and Political Violence

A dear family in our community is facing unimaginable hardship and separation after fleeing persecution in Iran — and they urgently need our support.

In 2022, Maryam and Omid [names changed for their saftey] joined the Woman, Life, Freedom protests in Iran, where they were violently targeted by government forces. Maryam was beaten and shot with pellets. Omid’s brother was detained and later died from injuries sustained in custody. Their underground church was raided in 2024, and several congregants were arrested. Just two days after they fled, authorities raided their home and detained a family member — threatening to keep them imprisoned unless Maryam and Omid returned.

Instead, they fled across multiple countries, facing extreme danger along the way. In Mexico, they were abducted by cartels and held against their will. After a harrowing escape, they made it to the U.S. border and requested asylum — as is their legal right under international and U.S. law.

But instead of protection, they were arrested, separated, and mistreated.

Omid was deported to Panama — a country he had never even visited — where he was held in inhumane conditions. He recently obtained a work permit and now earns $20 a day doing field labor.

Maryam was transferred between multiple ICE detention centers and has spent the past seven months in limbo. Only recently did a judge allow her asylum case to move forward — a basic right she should have had from the start.

The systems that should have protected this family failed them. So now, we are stepping in. Please give what you can, and share their story. Every bit of support helps.

Let’s bring this family back together — and make sure they are safe, supported, and never alone.

My name is Mohammad Hosein A., and I’ve been supporting Maryam and Omid since early this year. I began translating between Maryam and her legal team in April and slowly became more involved as I learned more about their story. Over time, I’ve witnessed the strength this couple has shown in the face of unimaginable trauma, and I’ve seen just how broken the systems meant to protect them truly are. I’m organizing this fundraiser independently, in collaboration with community members who believe that no one should be punished for seeking safety. Thank you for reading, supporting, and sharing.
