Hello, Salaam,

I’m Frankie (she/her) living on the unceded lands of the Palawa people of Lutruwita (Tasmania), Australia.

I’ve been speaking with a young woman, Basma, living in the Al-Saraya camp, who is in desperate need of donations for food, water, fuel and a new tent. For five days now, all she has consumed is water with salt.

Basma is now the sole carer for her younger siblings and her elderly grandmother after her parents were killed when Israel struck their neighbourhood. Her youngest sibling is 6-months old and is in desperate need of milk or formula. She also has two other younger brothers (8 and 15), and three younger sisters (5, 12 and 18).

From Basma:

“My name is Basma. I’m 23 years old. I lost both of my parents because of the war, and since then, I’ve been taking care of my infant brother and my elderly grandmother — completely on my own.

We have no home. We live in a torn tent that doesn’t protect us from the cold or the heat. We have no income, no food, and none of the basic needs for a decent life.

Every day, I wake up searching for milk for my baby brother, and something — anything — to feed my grandmother. I try to stay strong, but this life is heavier than I can carry alone.

I’m reaching out with all my heart: please help me so I can provide for my little family. Any support, no matter how small, can make a huge difference in our lives.”

Thank you for not looking away. Until the seige is broken and the aid is let in, this is the only way people like Basma and her family are able to get some of the last remaining food and basic supplies in Gaza. Things that everyone should have access to; things that were taken from them and are now being withheld. It is forced starvation, and a matter of life and death. Please give what you can. If you’re buying a coffee today, please consider giving the same in a donation.

One of Basma’s friends, Nojoum, told me about their struggles, and that no one had helped Basma to make a donation page for her family yet, and that they desperately need help. Nojoum and her siblings are also in dire need – yesterday the only “meal” they had was boiled tree leaves. She managed to find 2kg of flour for $150 today, and had to beg to get it on credit, with the promise to pay back soon. Nojoum has 7 younger siblings, the youngest is 5, and her 17 year old sister, Nour, has respiratory problems and is only just surviving. Their parents were also killed over 2
