“I am currently on a Sanctuary Scholarship, and while it has been a lifeline in many ways, the allowance I was receiving ended in April. Since then, I’ve been going through a very difficult time both financially and mentally.

The financial strain has led to severe food insecurity, and even covering basic necessities like a bus pass has become a challenge. I have managed to get a part time job, which I am grateful for, but it’s still very tight. I’m also supporting my younger brother who is currently stranded in France, and trying to contribute to my mother’s court related expenses as she is a political prisoner back home.

All of this has taken a toll on my well being, and it’s affecting my academic life too. I’ve also fallen behind on rent, with an outstanding balance of £277 of which I got multiple warnings letters about.”

STAR believes that it’s imperative to create a genuine enviornment of sanctuary for students coming to Sheffield seeking safety and security. This project doesn’t begin and end with the sanctuary scholarships, but involves standing alongside our fellow students to ensure their ability to continue their studies in community. Any donation you’re able to make towards ensuring Patience’s last few months of studies are free from financial, mental, and academic difficulties is much appreciated.
