The Ukrainian School in Evacuation: Building the Future for Ukrainian Refugee Teachers and Students in Slovakia

Our Story

The Ukrainian School in Evacuation offers an opportunity for children forced to flee their homes in Ukraine to:

In 2022-2024 years the school was supported by UNICEF. However, in June 2024, their funding for the school ceased. To ensure the start of the school year 2024/25 a crowdfunding campaign on Slovak platform Donio was launched. Despite its success the existence of the school was still in danger so the administration literally had to assemble the school’s yearly budget like a jigsaw puzzle, including contributions from the parents of our students.

In February 2025 the Ukrainian School in Evacuation was officially recognized by the Slovak Ministry of Education as a foreign school in Slovakia and integrated into Slovakian school educational system. It allows to cover the gap in educational timeline, existing for the Ukrainian refugee students in Slovakia due to the limited capacities of the Slovak high schools and language barrier. But we still need your help to maintain the school as foreign schools don’t have any funding from the state.

Your contribution will support not only the children but also their refugee teachers.

The school began its existence in April 2022. On a volunteer basis, Ukrainian refugee teachers started teaching Ukrainian curricula to schoolchildren from Ukraine who had been forced to leave their homes. For the third academic year, Ukrainian students living in Slovakia are learning core subjects – Ukrainian language, history, mathematics, English, and Slovak. In addition, children gain knowledge in career counseling, financial literacy, and explore themselves in art therapy classes. During this period, 310 Ukrainian children have studied at the school.

The Ukrainian School in Evacuation employs 9 expert teachers, a psychologist, and two administrators, mainly Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia. This model allows Ukrainian refugees not only to receive help but also to actively provide it in accordance with their professional qualifications.

The purpose of our school’s activities is to continue the educational process for Ukrainian students, prepare future applicants for university admission, and create favorable conditions for their social integration – enabling them to communicate and become friends with their peers, learn about life in the EU, receive psychological assistance and comprehensive support, and get to know Bratislava and all of Slovakia. We create a safe and friendly atmosphere for students at school, filling them with positive emotions and motivating them to learn.

Who is Behind the Campaign?

We are SME SPOLU – a civic association of Ukrainians in Slovakia, founded in Bratislava in 2015.

From 2014 we worked as volunteers. Our volunteer activities, aimed at helping Ukraine, involve not only international but also local Slovak civic associations and representatives of other diasporas living in Slovakia. As a volunteer movement focused on helping Ukraine, for a year and a half, we cared for injured Ukrainians who underwent treatment and rehabilitation in Slovakia and Austria. We purchased medicines and medical supplies for Ukrainian hospitals, and collected and transported clothes, footwear, toys, baby food, and hygiene products for children of fallen Ukrainian heroes, orphanages, and displaced persons in Ukraine.

The natural outcome of our volunteer activities was the establishment of the charitable foundation “Ukraine-Slovakia SOS” in Ukraine and the civic association “SME SPOLU” (Ukrainian: “МИ РАЗОМ”) in Slovakia. Both organizations are managed by the same team, and we implement projects together. Among the largest of these are:

Humanitarian aid for Ukrainian orphaned children and hospitals in the frontline zone (in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic). Assisting in explaining information about the rights of refugees and temporarily displaced persons (in cooperation with SlovakAid). Ukrainian-Slovak House (in cooperation with the City of Bratislava and the Bratislava-Nové Mesto district). Creation of Ukrainian community center to support the education, integration, and protection of Ukrainians who have been granted temporary protection in Slovakia (in cooperation with UNICEF). Social integration of Ukrainians who have been granted temporary asylum in Slovakia (in cooperation with UNHCR). Alongside these projects, we assist emergency aid centers in areas of active hostilities by directly collecting charitable donations. Additionally, an ambulance, a mobile laboratory, a mobile X-ray machine, medicines, and bandages have been handed over to Ukrainian medical workers in the frontline zone. We also directly help the wounded and their families.
