Hello, my name is Chloe Sutton – I am raising money for my friend Israa and her family. Israa lives in Gaza, Palestine and is vision impaired – she does not have access to internet or phone and the following message was transcribed by her family friend Mohammed O- who travelled 35km by foot to her location to get all the necessary information from her to help her start her fundraising campaign.

Meet Israa:

Words from Israa –

Peace be upon you. I am Israa, 18 years old, and a person with a visual impairment. I would like to tell you my story. When I was 40 days old, symptoms of a problem with my eyes began to appear. My father and I went to the doctor, and he told us that I had retinal detachment. When I was one year old, I traveled to Nablus for treatment, but unfortunately, there was no progress. However, my father did not lose hope; he continued to treat me. When I was eight years old, I traveled again to Jordan approximately 11 times. I underwent successful surgery, but no progress was made.

I felt extremely sad, cried profusely, and lost hope. As a child, I was criticized for my eyesight and heard all sorts of hurtful words. I felt sad when I saw my classmates looking at the classroom board from a distance, while I could barely see it. But my father, once again, did not lose hope. When I was 10 years old, I traveled to Ramallah and underwent laser eye surgery. The doctor said I should travel every six months for the procedure, but we couldn’t afford it because of my father’s financial situation. He was responsible for the travel expenses, and he took out loans from his colleagues so we could travel for treatment.

When I was over eleven, I traveled to Jerusalem. I was about to undergo the surgery, but I didn’t because the doctors had lost hope of its success. I also lost hope of seeing again, but my father didn’t.

When I was 14, my father, my brother Mohammed, and I traveled to Egypt to undergo the necessary surgery. However, two years after the surgery, my family suddenly noticed a white coating on my lens. We went to Egypt to see the doctor for a checkup, and the doctor told me life-changing news. He said I had lost sight in my right eye. I was deeply saddened and felt broken, as I had little hope of treating my vision.

Despite all this, my father did not lose hope. He is interested in treating me. Now that I am eighteen years old, my vision in my left eye has weakened and I have almost lost my sight. Despite the difficulties I have faced and continue to face, I will not lose hope and I always say, “Thank God.” I entered high school and worked hard in my studies. My ambitions and dreams grew. On June 11, 2023, my father and I traveled to Jerusalem to undergo surgery. Here, the shock was that the occupation had prevented us from traveling or leaving Gaza.

Months later, the war on Gaza began. Here, my health condition has deteriorated to this day. There is also a shortage of treatments, especially my own. I left my home, and for the first time, the feeling was very difficult. I lived in suffering and harsh conditions. After months of war, I felt pain in the eye that I had lost, so I went to the doctor with my father. He told me that there was a lot of pressure on my eye. I was in a lot of pain and it remained that way.

For a month, my family helped me improve my health. This happened due to the deterioration of my psychological state and the discomfort in my eyes. However, I did not give up and went about my daily life and started studying with determination, resolve, and positivity. I would like to tell you about my dreams.

My dreams are simple: First, to graduate successfully and make my parents proud. Second, to get a job and also to help my family with their living expenses. I also want to open my own business in my name, donate to orphans, visit nursing homes, and witness their joy. I advise those who watch me to be optimistic and not lose hope. I am Israa from Gaza, and this is my story in brief.
