Help Us Continue Creative Workshops for Migrant Women in Bristol!
In 2023, artist and community facilitator Carlota Matos partnered with refugee charity Borderlands to run weekly theatre workshops for migrant women.
Since then, the project has evolved into a vibrant, ever-growing creative women’s group, where participants learn and share a variety of artistic skills.
With your help, we want to ensure this vital, creative space continues after the funding runs out!
Each week, women from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds gather to connect, create, and explore identity and culture in a welcoming, joyful environment.
The sessions use movement/dance, music, visual arts, crafts, and theatre games to build confidence, reduce isolation, and celebrate each woman’s unique story.
In just over a year, more than 50 women from 20+ countries have taken part. Many speak little or no English, but Carlota’s methods—developed through an Arts Council DYCP grant—help the group transcend language barriers. With her guidance, women have led their own activities, taught dances, shared recipes, and even presented at public events.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive:
“I loved the women’s theatre group because it felt safe to explore theatrical dynamics and creative ways to interact with ourselves and others.” “When we finish, we always feel better than when we started.”
Workshops are free to attend and include travel expenses, childcare, refreshments, and access support. By removing these barriers, we’re making arts and culture truly accessible—especially for those most often excluded.
We are currently working towards being fully member-run, and Carlota recently delivered some training for migrant women to learn how to run their own workshops and activities, which we want to build on.
We also run taster sessions in asylum hotels and organise trips to increase members’ access to cultural spaces in Bristol.
We want to continue this work after the funding runs out. That’s where you come in.
Your donation will help fund:
– Facilitation and coordination of the workshops and trips – Guest artist sessions and collaborative projects – Travel support for participants – Materials, refreshments, venue hire – Facilitation training for migrant women
Donate now to help us keep the group going after the funding runs out! Every contribution—large or small—makes a real difference.
