My name is Hossam Ayesh, a nursing student from Gaza. I worked in hospitals to save the wounded under relentless airstrikes. I believed that medicine and humanity could save lives, but on October 7, 2023, my dream turned into a nightmare.
My Life Before the War – A Passion for Nursing and Helping Others
Since childhood, I dreamed of becoming a nurse, helping patients, and easing their pain. I was studying at the Islamic University in Gaza, working hard to build a better future for my family.

But I never imagined that one day, I would be the one in need of saving…
The Moment of Destruction – When Survival Became a Miracle
When the war began, I volunteered at Al-Shifa Hospital, trying to save as many lives as possible. I wasn’t afraid of the bombings, but I was terrified of losing my family.
Airstrikes were everywhere. There was no safe place – not even hospitals.
Then, I received the most devastating news – our home had been completely destroyed!
Our house in Sheikh Radwan, where I grew up, where my siblings and I played, where my parents built their dreams for us… was gone in seconds.
We cook on open fires and struggle daily to find food.
Everything is difficult – even finding food has become a struggle. Children search for a meal to fill their hunger, while we fight to survive another day.
But We Won’t Give Up – We Still Laugh Despite the Pain
We haven’t settled in one place. We have been displaced repeatedly, moving from one place to another. Our home, which was once a safe haven, is now a painful memory. But despite all of this, we still hold on to hope. Even now, with everything we’ve lost, we still manage to laugh together, finding strength in the small moments of happiness. Those moments give us the power to keep going.
