Wifaq is a fierce human rights defender and queer activist who has dedicated her life to supporting Black migrants and LGBTQI++ refugees in Tunisia. As part of the Urgent Response Network, established in February 2023 after the President’s racist incitement against migrants, Wifaq played a crucial role in aiding displaced people—especially in Sfax, home to Tunisia’s largest refugee population.

Her commitment to justice came at a heavy price.

In early 2024, Wifaq was arrested while helping a journalist translate an interview with a migrant woman. Civil police detained her, the journalist, and the migrant, interrogating her for hours without legal representation. The authorities accused her of conspiring against the state and subjected her to further interrogation.

Fearing unjust detention and persecution, Wifaq fled Tunisia in May 2024, seeking asylum in Sweden. However, as an asylum seeker, she is obliged to stay at a refugee camp in the far north of Sweden, Boden, in very hard conditions and is struggling to secure basic needs like food, shelter, and legal aid.

Meanwhile, the journalist she worked with has been banned from leaving Tunisia, a clear sign of the continued crackdown on those who expose injustice.
