ECHO is a multilingual mobile library that provides books, language learning resources, children’s activities and so much more to residents of refugee camps around Athens, Greece. In a week we visit 5 camps and two community spaces, driving more than 200km in order to reach them all.

Last year we loaned over 1000 books and distributed 1000 language learning resources. Hundreds of people visit the library, not only to borrow books but also for a chat, English practice, ideas for how to sign up for language courses and legal support. Our children’s sessions nurture their creativity, motor skills and ability to focus – essential for the many of those who are not able to attend school.

Through our library we see both intense human suffering and the hope of a different world. As a collective we work together to achieve change through the library and with our wider community.

We need your support to keep our community mobile library going. We are small but mighty and with your help we can continue our work.

The average book in Arabic or Farsi costs around 15 euros and whilst we are fortunate to get occasional donations, it is not enough to meet the demand of our library users. Our other main expenses are: the two stipends for our 2 long-term volunteers, mobile library van insurance and maintenance, fuel costs, printing for request and language learning resources.

The situation in Greece for asylum seekers and refugees is one of deprivation and lack of support. Although no longer a main news story, people are still arriving into Greece in their thousands and are kept in isolated camps that severely lack social, health and educational services.

We need your help to ensure that our mobile library can keep up its work, offering educational resources, novels, a sense of community, hope and opportunity to some of the most vulnerable and marginsalised people in Europe.
