Support for Gaza refugee families in Greece

A number of Palestinian families from Gaza- and young men and women travelling alone- remain in limbo in a refugee camp on Lesvos island.

Amongst them are a couple who, just before they made the perilous sea crossing, received news that their entire immediate and extended family had been killed in the North of Gaza- over 90 of their relatives in total. Another family, whose relatives were sheltering together and killed in a single airstrike to their multi-story home in Jabaliya, lost 70 family members.

Also in the camp are an ambulance volunteer, a young language student travelling alone, minors who have made the journey by sea, a father who doesn’t know if his wife and children are still alive in Gaza and others who anxiously await news from back home.

The winter humanitarian conditions in the camp here are bleak, in unheated tents, exposed to the elements and with scarce access to the most basic of supports.

The majority of those present from Gaza have to leave the camp in the next 30 days, or face eviction with nowhere to go.

Those present (who have lost their homes and savings, as well as families) are precarious, have run out of money, and do not have family or friends elsewhere in Europe.

Funds raised will not in any way lessen the grief, and trauma, that they are all enduring. But they will help to provide emergency cash supports- towards groceries, warm clothes, transport costs, phone credit and ID fees as they await their travel documents, and try to decide on their next steps.

All funds raised will be passed on in cash while we are still here in Lesvos (volunteering with projects with those seeking refuge) or sent via Western Union to them, if any money continues to be raised once we leave late next week.

Thank you for your support, and solidarity.
