The refugees being held at the Park Hotel, where Novak Djokovic was detained, were able to fight for their freedom in court. But the fight is not over for five refugees left behind in indefinite detention in Australia.

Despite the well deserved victory in having the Park Hotel closed down, there are still many of our fellow asylum seekers from Nauru who have been held in Australian detention now for TEN YEARS.

They are the forgotten people.

In detention that is publicly owned but largely privately run and for-profit, trauma, assault and self harm are all too common. Up until last month, the pandemic meant those in Australian detention were denied visits from family, children or even legal representatives.

“The hardest part is the uncertainty. You never know when you are going to leave. That is why the mental health of people in detention is worse than many other people in the world.”

The Department of Home Affairs appears unsure as to whether many of these people should be in the offshore process or will be processed in Australia.

My name is Alison Battisson and I am the Founder of Human Rights for All. I know we can and must solve indefinite detention. My pro bono legal team represents long-term detained and complex case refugees and stateless people in Australia’s immigration detention systems.

In detention there is this merry go round of legal actions. The refugee keeps winning in the federal court and the decision is just referred back to the Minister who remakes the same decision. This process can go on for years.

We need your support to keep coming up with creative legal challenges that can change the systemic ways that innocent people are kept indefinitely in detention.

We know of at least 5 forgotten people left behind in detention in Australia, but there are more. We are also working with the long term detained as there are a significant number who have been in detention for over 10 years.

HR4A receives no government funding due to the conflict of interest, and relies on donations and court costs (when we win!).

All money raised will go to funding our legal representation for the above people. If we win in court, the money will be recycled for others. We know that running our cases will help others in detention, so the work supported by your donation helps everyone!

Human Rights for All is a registered charity with DGR status. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
