Meysam’s Story

Meysam left Pakistan alone when he was just 14-years-old. Arriving in Australia by boat, he was sent to the Republic of Nauru, where he spent the next seven years in immigration detention.

In Nauru, Meysam met his wife, Yasmin, who fell pregnant soon after they married. At five months gestation, Yasmin was transferred to Australia for medical treatment but Meysam was not allowed to go with her. Yasmin was never sent back to Nauru, where Meysam remained for almost two more years. When his daughter was 18-months-old, Meysam was finally transferred to Australia, however, instead of being reunited with his family, he spent another 21 months in a detention centre in Australia.

In late 2021, Meysam was finally released into community detention with his wife and daughter. This means they live in a house and enjoy some freedoms but with many restrictions, no work rights and limited financial aid. Meysam and Yasmin are trying their best to give their little girl a good life while waiting to be resettled in a country they can call home.

What’s the problem?

Meysam has lived with chronic, mostly untreated dental pain for years. Dental and medical care on Nauru is extremely basic and having a tooth pulled did little to solve the problem, in fact, it created more discomfort, and chewing has been painful ever since.

But recently the pain has gotten much worse.

Meysam urgently needs significant dental work, including a root canal, crown and surgery to remove infected tooth debris left by the dentist on Nauru, which could spread if left untreated.

Meysam’s treatment plan costs have been estimated as totalling $3,839.00. His immigration status means he’s not entitled to Medicare and the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) has so far been unwilling to cover the costs. Meysam has appealed this unfathomable position but a response could take months and it is unlikely the government will change its position.

Please help ease Meysam’s pain.

All donations will help get Meysam the treatment he desperately needs. The dental costs would have been higher but a generous dentist already provided a significant amount of work on a pro bono basis.

In the event that any more funds are raised then what is needed for the dental work, all the donated funds will go to Meysam and his wife to use as they need living in the community here in Australia.

Meysam is very grateful for the support.
