Human Rights Fund for Ukrainian Roma
Belgium
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the morning of the 24th February 2022, large numbers of Ukrainian Roma have been internally displaced or fled to neighbouring countries. The Roma are Ukraine’s largest and most marginalised ethnic minority group. Large numbers of Romani people faced systemic discrimination, poor access to basic services, and the risk of statelessness due to an absence of identification documents before the war broke out.
While hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees are escaping to neighbouring countries, not all are being treated equally by border guards and local authorities in their host countries. There are confirmed reports of racialised minorities being denied exit from the country, neglected in the allocation of aid, or stranded at the border after being turned down by organised transports. Romani refugees often face multiple levels of discrimination from the border police to the local authorities, with many being segregated from non-Roma or completely neglected by authorities dealing with refugees from Ukraine.
For some, reaching the safety of neighbouring countries is not an option because of a lack of identification documents. Others are simply unable to afford the cost of travelling hundreds of kilometers through conflict areas to reach the borders.
The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) is financially supporting Roma-led initiatives inside Ukraine as well as in neighbouring Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.
Your donation will be used to directly support Roma from Ukraine: both those trapped inside the country, and those who are trying to rebuild their lives elsewhere. We will use your donation to pay for aid for people fleeing the war, as well as those who remain in Ukraine. We will use it to pay for gasoline, transport, and other things necessary to get our human rights monitors in place to monitor the situation of Romani refugees. We will be transparant about where this money is spent and when.
The ERRC have already contributed significant emergency resources to deal with this human rights crisis. But we’re in it for the long-run, and we need your help. We are used to dealing with complex, long-term human rights issues and we are committed to supporting Romani families in receiving equal access to safety and peace.
