Help us welcome Afghan Interpreters and their Families
Canada
In recognition of the personal risk that many Afghans took by assisting the government of Canada as interpreters, drivers, cooks an so on, a special program was implemented to bring these individuals – and their families – to safety.
Hundreds of Afghan families have now arrived in Toronto, many of them with only the clothes on their backs. With few resources at their command, these families need to build their lives anew. There is a gap between what the government can provide to help them do so and what newcomers will require to restart their lives here.
We created Canadian Connections to try to bridge this gap.
Your donations will go towards seasonally appropriate outerwear and footwear, school supplies, phones and laptop computers, help with moving expenses and furnishings and other household goods for their new homes.
We are also looking for in-kind donations of gently used furniture and household goods and new phones and computers. If your organization would like to make a donation of this sort, please email [email protected].
Many thanks to the businesses and organizations that have supported us thus far!
We are a grassroots group of GTA residents – social workers, teachers, media and communications professionals, and everyday citizens – who have significant volunteer experience in the private sponsorship of refugees and the refugee settlement sector. Calling ourselves “Canadian Connections”, we were started by a core group of volunteers, who in 2015 ran one of the largest grassroots efforts for Syrian refugees, The Clothing Drive and who were instrumental in the creation of Newcomer Kitchen. We are partnered with Afghan-Canadian Interpreters, a group of Canadian veterans and ordinary citizens who have worked tirelessly to facilitate the evacuation of Afghans who assisted Canada.
To date, Canadian Connections has assisted over 70 families but we need help from more concerned Canadians in order to meet the growing needs. There are more Afghans coming, and we want to ensure that each of them has a warm welcome to Canada, knowing that we are forever grateful for the risks they have taken.
