The Australian government’s refugee policies devastated 24-year-old Atefeh’s family and robbed some of the most important years of her life – now, we have a chance to help her pick up the pieces and rebuild.

When Atefeh was a teenager, she fled persecution in Iran with her parents seeking a life of freedom and safety in Australia. Despite being verified as a genuine refugee, the three of them were unlawfully detained for six years on the tiny, remote island of Nauru. The detention facilities in Nauru were devastating – refugees were crowded into tents at temperatures above 110 degrees without air conditioning, education, recreation and medical facilities for years.

Now, Atefeh and her parents have been transferred to the United States — but her freedom has come at a terrible price. She has lost her teenage years forever to the squalor of detention on Nauru, and she can never get those years back. Her parents suffered various physical and mental illnesses as a result of detention, and due to the incredible pressure on the family, they sadly separated after their transfer to the United States, adding to Atefeh’s trauma.

The Aussie-run Ads-Up Refugee Network is seeking to cover Atefeh’s basic expenses and to help give her a firm footing to recover and rebuild. Please chip in to help us repair the damage our government has inflicted >>

Atefeh spent six of the most important years of her life, between the ages of 17 and 23, detained by the Australian Government on Nauru.

While she should have been able to live freely as a normal teenager — building friendships, developing life skills and studying for the future — she was instead put through the trauma of indefinite detention and immigration limbo.

Now, Atefeh finds herself in the United States in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis.

We have the chance to help.

Along with finding a job to support herself, Atefeh hopes to start and complete her high school diploma, and then go college, both of which she was not unable to complete in detention. Despite the incredible challenges she has faced, Atefeh says she will never give up working towards a better future – she has big dreams of becoming an architect and starting her own architecture firm.

Chip in to support Atefeh to rebuild her life after six years in detention. Together, we can give her the support she deserves >>

The Aussie-run Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this fundraiser for Atefeh. Funds donated will be deposited directly to Atefeh’s bank account daily, so she is able to use funds for her living expenses and potential education opportunities.

If you can, please chip in now to help give Atefeh a new start so she can pay rent, pay for school needs, food, and other essentials like repaying her flight costs from Nauru to America.
