Life After Manus: Help a Young Refugee with Leukemia
New York, New York, United States
Donations are 100% tax deductible
Abbas was only 18 years old when bomb blasts, terrorism and fear of the Taliban drove him from his home in Pakistan.
He tried to head to the safety of Australia, instead he was unlawfully detained on Manus Island. Despite qualifying as a genuine refugee, Abbas was held in detention for over six years before finally resettling in the United States.
Having lost much of his youth to Australia’s detention policies, Abbas was excited to start a new life in the USA. He arrived in May, during the first wave of a pandemic which wrought a devastating toll on immigrant communities and the working poor.
A month later, he was diagnosed with leukemia, a condition Australian authorities failed to diagnose in detention.
As COVID-19 continues to ravage the United States, the 25-year-old is now confined to his home without visitors and emotional support – they would pose a serious risk to his already immunocompromised health.
Abbas reached out to the Ads-Up Refugee Network for help. Our on-the-ground volunteer team in his local community are ensuring he is not alone and can feel comfortable while he undergoes treatment.
The Ads-Up Refugee Network has set up this fund to help Abbas pay for essentials and to buy him a laptop and internet access from home. We’re also helping cover the costs of transport to the hospital and fresh, healthy groceries — if we raise enough, we’d like to support his educational aspirations and with online courses as well.
Abbas is young, optimistic and determined to beat this disease. “At least I’m free,” he told us.
Funds donated will be held in Ads-Up’s Charity account and used to directly pay for Abbas’ costs. A volunteer group in his home city are helping coordinate support.
