At 30 years old, Sam fled Iran following threats of religious persecution.

He fled to Australia where he sought protection, unlawfully detained by the government on Manus Island. After nearly six years of indefinite detention in horrific conditions, Sam was resettled in Baltimore, Maryland, in July 2019.

Since beginning his new life, Sam has tried to make the best of a challenging situation, one made far tougher by the COVID-19 crisis and serious dental issues.

The only dentist on Manus wasn’t equipped or properly trained to treat a range of dental problems, instead opting to merely extract teeth without replacement. While stranded in PNG, Sam lost nine teeth.

“He destroyed my face,” Sam says. “I have to eat only soft food and I can’t eat meat and hard fruits or vegetables.“

Sam is studying to become an electrical engineer and is looking forward to creating a new life for himself in the US.

“I am here for around 15 months and I decided to be useful and have a great job here and I started to search for college here and I am studying in college now,“ he says.

“I’m asking for your help because I want to smile and eat like normal again,“ he tells us.

The Aussie-run Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this fundraiser for Sam. Funds donated will be deposited directly to Sam’s bank account daily so he is able to use funds for this dental care.

If you feel able, please chip in to help Sam regain his dignity and get on with his new life in the USA.

Donations are tax-deductible in the United States. Donations will be held in the Ads-Up Charity account and used to pay for Sam’s dental treatment. Any excess funds will be directed to additional needs from Sam and other refugees. At his request, Sam’s name has been changed to protect his privacy.
