Gihan was in his early 20s when he was imprisoned on suspicion of supporting a rebel organisation. He was relocated to three different prisons in three different cities over those years and was finally released by paying an extortionate $5,000.

Supposedly free, Gihan felt increasingly unsafe, facing repeated interrogations and harassment. He fled in search of freedom and safety — he found himself back in prison, unlawfully detained on Manus Island by the Australian government.

For five long years, Gihan languished in immigration limbo, despite qualifying as a genuine refugee.

In September 2018, he was finally approved for resettlement to the United States. He initially found work at Duncan Donuts and then in Walmart, low paid job with a low level of security, especially in a time of COVID-19.

“Work is the most important thing,” he tells us. “If I can’t find decent work I am afraid I will end up homeless.”

Gihan tells us that he feel very helpless. He is under tremendous pressure to make enough money just to keep his head above water.

Commercial truck driving licences have been a ticket to self-sufficiency and independence for dozens of Manus and Nauru refugees, but training and licence costs are a stumbling block.

The Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this fundraiser to help Gihan fund the training costs for a commercial truck-driving licence. He tells us he would eventually like to start his own independent trucking business, so this may be just the beginning.

Chip in now to help Gihan attain his license and find his feet >>

Funds donated will be held in Ads-Up’s Charity Account and used to directly pay for training costs. If this page raises more than is required to fund Gihan’s training, excess funds will be reallocated to help another refugee cover training costs.
