October 5 Update:

Ads Up Canada Refugee Network is a federally incorporated Canadian charity that mobilizes Australians and Canadians to resettle refugees detained in Australia’s offshore processing system through private sponsorship. We do this through Operation #NotForgotten, a partnership between Ads Up Canada, MOSAIC (a Canadian Sponsorship Agreement Holder based in Vancouver), and the Refugee Council of Australia, which offers a durable solution for refugees who have been indefinitely detained on PNG or Nauru as part of Australia’s offshore processing system.

Ads Up Canada plays a vital role in Operation #NotForgotten. Applications are submitted to Canadian immigration through MOSAIC while Ads Up Canada recruits, trains and assists the settlement teams that welcome and support arriving refugees during their first year in Canada. Since our inception we have recruited hundreds of volunteers across Canada to form dozens of settlement teams and built vital partnerships with MOSAIC, the Refugee Council of Australia and UNHCR Australia.

Since 2019, Ads Up Canada has been working to sponsor stranded Manus and Nauru refugees for resettlement in Canada through the country’s unique Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program.

Ads Up Canada has recruited over 150 volunteers across Canada who will support refugee newcomers for their first 12 months of life in Canada.

But for too many refugees, the detention nightmare continues. We can’t stop now.

Over the next 2 years, we plan to continue our partnerships and sponsor dozens more refugees, raise the funds to support their resettlement and recruit over 100 volunteers to fill out the required volunteer sponsorship teams in Canada.

Chip in now to help sustain and expand this important work >>

Since we launched in 2019, Ads Up Canada has grown from being a volunteer-run resettlement network to a registered Canadian charity.

Over that time, we’ve proven that our model for recruiting expats as volunteers and raising funds from across Australia works effectively and gets results. Together, our volunteers have provided hope for dozens of the most vulnerable Manus and Nauru refugees.

Over the past nine years, it’s become clearer than ever that we cannot rely on the government to fix this crisis. But if the government won’t fix this, we will.

Questions & Answers

If your question is not answered here, please email us at [email protected]

How do you select refugees?

We work with the UNHCR in Australia to prioritize the most urgent cases who have no current or pending options for resettlement. We take UNHCR advice on prioritization in consultation with partners including MOSAIC.

Depending on capacity, we may be able to assist with guided sponsorship in cases where funds have already been raised, or volunteers recruited. We sponsor both onshore and offshore refugees.

Can I get a tax receipt for my donation?

Yes! Ads Up Canada is a registered Canadian charity.

What’s the difference between you and other groups in this field?

Ads Up Canada is the only Canadian volunteer group working with MOSAIC, B.C. to assist with applications and resettlement team recruitment. We plan to submit applications both through MOSAIC and independently, whichever offers the fastest, most certain route for the refugee.

Our strength is our ability to mobilize the Australian expat community but also Canadians interested in private sponsorship, while also raising funds through our deep ties to Australians and Australian refugee advocacy organizations.

What if Canada ends its private sponsorship program, or the Australian government resolves the Manus/Nauru issue through Australia or New Zealand-based resettlement?

After more than nine years of the long-running Manus/Nauru refugee nightmare, we do not foresee a swift political resolution to this issue, nor is the Canadian system facing any foreseeable political threat. While the acceptance of the NZ offer is wonderful news, this resettlement process will still leave many refugees without a future. We focus exclusively on refugees that have no other durable resettlement option. Refugees who were detained offshore from 2013 onwards are not currently eligible for community resettlement through the newly announced Australian community resettlement initiative.

However, if Manus and Nauru refugees are resettled elsewhere at scale, or the Canadian resettlement scheme is somehow no longer a viable option, Ads Up Canada will redirect funds and resources to building support networks in those new resettlement countries, to directly supporting refugees still in detention and to supporting the 800+ Manus/Nauru refugees who have arrived in the USA and now face a dire situation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
