Phones for Manus and Nauru Refugees
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
At the Mantra Hotel, Preston and MITA detention centre in Broadmeadows, over 100 people have only their phones as connection to the outside world.
They arrived for medical treatment from Manus and Nauru last year and are still detained, even though community alternatives are lawful and available.
Since Covid-19, they can’t have any visitors, making it even more important to have reliable contact with lawyers, family and friends.
Each month, we get requests to replace old and broken phones that have kept them connected and with something to do while denied opportunities to work, study or any other meaningful activity.
Right now, we are trying to replace 9 phones and fix 3 others. This feels more urgent during Covid-19 when no one, not even their lawyers, can visit.
Can you help? Ideally we’d like to replace old phones with new entry-level smartphones, but if you have a phone in good condition (especially screen and battery) that can support the new operating systems, please message us.
If you would like to contribute as a tax deductible donation, you can also message us and we will arrange to do this through a registered charity we partner with.
