On a long refugee journey, pregnant and facing homelessness

Nazgul and Javad are a beautiful young couple- artists and journeyers- who left their home countries and set off to seek refuge- and lives of more stability and less precarity- in Europe. They met and fell in love on the journey. After having survived weeks on foot through mountain ranges, and a dangerous sea crossing, they arrived in Lesvos island in Greece.

There they worked as long-term volunteers with an arts and music project that served, and engaged, others in refugee camps on the island- channeling their own experience of the hardships of the journey into meaningful work with young and older refuge-seekers.

Limbo and Precarity in Athens

Nazgul and Javad are now in Athens, navigating the limbo of the asylum system there and sleeping on friends’ couches. Nazgul is pregnant, they have no family in Greece, and limited, under-resourced support networks to turn to. Javad’s asylum claim has also been refused, and they need funds to hire a lawyer to fight potential deportation. Neither have the right to work in Greece. This crowd-funder is a means of expressing practical solidarity with a young couple who have made long, difficult journeys in search of safety and more possibility. They have creativity, courage and love to offer whatever community or country they end up in.

Practical Solidarity

They’ve found a very humble studio flat to rent for 350 euros (before bills) per month, but need to pay a deposit and two months rent up front. They also need funds to retain a solicitor to represent Jawad’s appeal. It is hoped that this crowd-funder can raise enough to cover their rent for 12 months. Anything raised above that will for legal fees, funds for food/subsistence supplies, fuel/electricity and pre-natal care.

Longer-term, Nazgul and Javad need access to their right to international protection, and to build lives of dignity, safety and meaning. For now, though, any donation- no matter how humble- will be a help in building even tentative stability around this small, soon to be family of three, of survivors- and dreamers.

-The money raised will be sent to Nazgul and Javad via Western Union transfers (as they don’t have a bank account), unless a standing order can be set up with a landlord/appartment owner-

(I, Caoimhe, have travelled back and forth over the past 6 years to work with volunteer/solidarity psycho-social and primary healthcare projects in refugee camps in Greece. I met the couple last summer in Lesvos and have stayed in contact since)
