Thank you so much for all of your help so far! We (MG and a volunteer from SOAS Detainee Support) have managed to obtain an emergency psychological assessment report (~£200) and a medical expert report (£1200, co-funded with another charity) to submit to the Home Office with the rest of her asylum application. We hope that she will soon be offered housing from the Home Office. Family threats continue, including ongoing payments for matchmaking services to facilitate a forced marriage, and this is never far from MG’s mind. She is still at risk of detention or deportation at any time. Thank you so much for your generosity so far in helping MG to stay where she is safe; in her local community in the UK. Any additional money raised will go towards legal advice as MG is currently unrepresented despite our best efforts.

MG is a very vulnerable asylum-seeker. She has PTSD from severe trauma, untreated psychosis and severe depression and suicidality (with previous, documented attempts). The psychosis is progressing, without easy access to support or a stable home. The Home Office says it won’t detain the most vulnerable – but for this, we need to show how vulnerable the individual is, urgently and at great cost.

To hire a private psychiatrist who can state that she has the above conditions, and that she cannot be detained for her safety. If this fails and she is detained or deported, she is at extreme risk to life both from herself and from family (forced marriage/ honor). We cannot let this happen. Even the Home Office’s own Asylum Safeguarding Hub have been particularly concerned for her safety; but without the correct paperwork, it means nothing.

All of the evidence needs to be in ASAP, which means we will have to pay extra for an urgent service. We are aiming to cover an urgent psychiatric appointment, letter and travel, but the final amount is yet to be confirmed. Any additional money we raise will go directly to MG, who has been living on £35/ week and is obviously living very precariously. She will then be able to complete her asylum application without fear of impending detention.

Update: we have received quotes from MEWA expert witnesses (£1250) and Helen Bamber (£2000). We are trying to get GP and psychologist reports to cover the gap until we have raised that amount. In the meantime, we are seeking an extension for the asylum application, which should enable us to get a solicitor on board.

Any amount that you can donate would be AMAZING! We would also really appreciate if you could share this fundraiser with anyone who might possibly be interested. We don’t have long – we need to give MG the best chance to survive this awful process. You can also sign the petition to the Home Office here:

Rensa (the fundraiser) and MG met through an organisation called SOAS Detainee Support, which assists people in or at risk of detention. To find out more about the organisation or about how you can volunteer with them, see their website here: https://soasdetaineesupport.wordpress.com/
