Canberra Walk For Refugees 2019
Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
Canberra Walk For Refugees has become an annual event. It was started in 2016 by Adelaide lawyer Adam Richards. From December 2016, he walked with his then 13 year old son, Ned from Adelaide to Canberra. Please note, the video displayed is from last years walk – any volunteers to make one for this year?
The Melbourne walk leaves from Parliament House, in Melbourne at 7 AM on 30 October. It will finish up in Canberra on 29th November. On the 30th there will be a concert with Dawn Barrington. On 1st December, there will be a march from the Mint Oval to Parliament House at 1.30 PM for a 2 PM start, followed by a rally and a synbolic launching of the boats.
There are big poblems with how we treat refugees and our policies. Worldwide, and increasingly in Australia, people are becoming aware of allegations of mistreatment, inadequate care and food, with the UN being critical of how we even handle the basics of care that we don’t deny our worst prisoners. There is currently a mental health crisis in our offshore detention facilities in PNG and Nauru, with over 100 incidents of self -harm and suicide since the Federal Election on 18 May 2019. These men are courageous human beings who have been stomped on for so long that they have been reduced to nothing. Many are still young men but their health has been brought so low by the stress of their situation, that many will not recover. Medical Facilities on Manus Island We are not aligned with any particular party or religious organisation. We are #StandingForHumanity by requesting an #Amnesty4ManusNauru that will free all the men in PNG and #Nauru and #LetThemGo. This also includes all those in Australia from Manus and Nauru, either for medical treatment or brought here as the result of the removal of children from Nauru. It also includes those now elsewhere in PNG such as Bomana Immigration Centre. As many no longer want to come to Australia, we need to assist them to go elsewhere and find a #SafeHaven. Part of this would be to #AcceptTheNewZealandDeal and maybe even negotiate with them to see if they will take more. However, some men have close family such as wives and children here already so we must settle these men here. After six years, of taking away their control we need to support and listen to their wishes. It is also necessary to #BringThemHere while we are listening too and fulfill their wishes. We support the #MedeVacBill as it provides them with the same access to health care our worst rapists and murderers have and these are much nicer people than that! Let’s keep #KeepMedeVacBill as it saves lives.
East Lorengau Transit Centre Manus Island We are #StandingForHumanity. Detention should be a last resort only when necessary to complete necessary health checks and to verify a person’s identity. Thus, we will on #EndMandatoryDetention offshore and onshore. Please ask for more information on how this can be done. We support the need to remember that #ChildrensNeedsAreParamount and that #NoChildBelongsInDetention.
These funds will enable us to be effective and have everything we need. They will go to things like accommodation on both walks, vehicle maintenance, petrol, food, website fees, charity registration and compliance requirements and things like stationary, brochures and printing.
However, we do not want this fundraiser to be just for ourself. We want to raise money for existing charities (all registered Australian charities) that help the men on Manus and Nauru with things such as clothing, phone credit (essential for the well-being so they can keep in touch with family) and legal assistance as well as food and clothing and shelter for those in Australia. We will also help those in detention in Australia as well as those in the community. We are also establishing our own charity. This will fight for the rights of all disadvanttaged people in Australia, with an initial focus on refugees. One are we are interested in developing more support services, is for #PeopleSeekingSafety that are homeless.
We really appreciate your help – most people can afford $1 or $2 and chuffed does accept donations as low as $1.00. All asylum seekers and refugees will apprexciate your support. If all my Facebook contacts gave $1, we would have $4500 immediately.
Please remember,. at the end of the walk on 30 November there will be a concert with folk singer Dawn Barrington. On 1 December, the day before the last week of parliament starts, we will march from the Mint Oval in Deakin to Parliament house and have a rally. From there, we will have a symbolic launching of the boats.
