HAPPY CARAVAN
Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands
This April, three chaperones and six seniors from Massachusetts traveled to Thermopylae, Greece to work with a non-profit called Happy Caravan.
Pulling up to the school, there is an overwhelming feeling of being a part of something thoroughly good. The long-term volunteers are some of the most inspiring people that one can meet. When we came, we added a brick to the many already laid before, knowing that more will be contributed by others to change the world for the better.
It’s tough to sum up everything that HC does. First and foremost, it provides kids a place where they can feel safe and be kids. They learn English, math, art, gardening, play sports, and try anything else that the volunteers may specialize in. On Fridays, all are invited for cinema, where a movie is projected and everyone gets free popcorn.
HC also serves as an anchor in the camp. Refugees from Syria, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan are welcome inside, no matter what religion or cultural background. HC restores people’s humanity. They makes sure that the children have access to Greek schools, sometimes they serve as an ambulance, but very importantly, they are an organization that the refugees know will advocate for them.
During our brief two week stay with helped the day to day opperations of the school, teaching about 100 kids per day. We also built a play structure where the kids can go when they’re not in school.
Since last year, Happy Caravan has expanded to an additional location, this one less glamorous, in a storage container, catering to kids who are in Greece with less rights than the group that we worked with in Thermopylae. There are also plans to expand and serve young women. Ala, the founder’s final dream, though it may be years away is to open a Happy Caravan in Syria, where people who could not afford to leave still live in far worse shape than the kids that we met.
The Ask: Please consider making a donation. If at all possible, join me and become a sustainable donor (5,10 or 15 dollars a month makes a very big difference). Happy Caravan depends entirely on private donations and scrambles every month to make rent, pay for petrol and supplies. A small monthly donation would be a huge game changer for this small but world changing organization. If you’d prefer to make a larger one time pledge anything that you give will be put to great use.
300 (about $335) Euros buys 150 kids fresh fruit once a day for a month. This does not only benefit their bodies and minds but creates community amongst their peers. Taking 10 minutes to sit together and eat our fruit in the classroom also builds friendships amongst the children. This ceremony of eating together has been passed down in all cultures for generations and having this culture in the Happy Caravan classroom teaches the children about peace and sharing with each other.
400 Euros will cover art supplies for a month.
Happy Caravan offers classes to almost 200 children everyday Monday to Friday. In order to keep our Art and project based classes open and available to these 200 children. This buys paints, paper, crayons, clay, gardening supplies and all the materials needed to keep this program running.
