An estimated 4.7 million Syrians have registered as refugees since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. Turkey houses 2.75 million Syrians, making up around 3.5 per cent of the country’s population. While Turkey’s generousity as a host country is undoubtably comendable, the situation for refugees is far from ideal. Seen as ‘guests’, they are only allowed to remain in Turkey temporarily until they are resettled by a third country. In the meantime, refugees have few opportunities to achieve self-reliance or access social protection.

Canada has been a world leader in addressing this crisis, accepting approximately 52,000 Syrain nationals between 2015 – 2018. However, the sheer scale of the crisis means many families still wait in limbo for the opportunity to rebuild thier lives in third countries such as Canada.

Bashir and his wife Ghnawa escaped the war in Syria and have taken refuge in Turkey for the past 4 years with their two young sons. They have been recognized by UNHCR and approved by the government of Canada for resettlement, but have been awaiting Canadian sponsors to come forward. Through the Blended Visa Office-Referred (BVOR) Program, the government will provide financial support for six months of their first year of their arrival in Canada, but private sponsors must undertake to support the other six months, and provide settlement support for the full year.

Our friends, family, and colleagues have decided to come together and create a Group of Five to sponsor Bashir and his family. Our application as sponsors has now been approved, and we expect they will arrive in Canada within the next 4-12 weeks. In preparation, we will be busy finding them an apartment, collecting household items such as furniture and food staples, purchasing warm clothes for their first Canadian winter, and identifying other resources that will help them successfully settle in Canada. Once the family arrives, we are excited to support their settlement by finding a school for the kids, helping the parents learn English and enter the Canadian labour force, connecting them with doctors, dentists and other resources, and building a strong community in Canada.

Our family has committed to raising $6500 towards meeting the financial requirements of sponsorship. This will go towards start up costs (furnishing, etc), as well as meeting the basic needs of the family, including monthly income support. We will also be accepting donations of furniture and some household items.
