In 2011 South Sudan gained its independence from Sudan through a referendum after decades of civil war. Initially, the hopes were great for “the youngest country on Earth”, but unfortunately in 2013 the new nation fell back into civil war.

Simon had been a law student in South Sudan, after a youth mostly spent in Uganda during the conflict with Sudan. After graduation, he became a civil servant in the new South Sudanese government. However, when violence broke out again – largely along ethnic lines – Simon had to flee the country and ended up in Kenya, where he has been a refugee ever since.

Simon has been a leader within the South Sudanese refugee community in Kenya and enrolled at Hekima College (a Jesuit-run University in Nairobi) in their Peace Studies programme, where he has by now finished all his courses and has been working on his thesis, which deals with reconciliation between the Dinka and Nuer people. He will be defending that thesis on February 9th 2018.

University fees in Kenya are high and refugees are not allowed to work. So far, Simon has been able to gather the money for his courses, but right now he is stuck. He still needs 600€, and he needs it soon: if he cannot pay before February 9th, he will not be allowed to defend his thesis and graduate.

As a former student of Peace Studies myself, and a friend of Simon’s, I feel very strongly that he should be able to finish his degree, which he’s put so much work into for the last two years. His commitment to his community, regardless of ethnicity, should be supported and strengthened. I believe that Simon, with the tools and opportunities this degree will offer him, can be an even more effective leader than he already is.

I have met Simon many times, and have talked to him often. He’s deeply committed to bringing peace within the refugee community and to South Sudan as a nation. I have witnessed his kindness and heard his astute, critical yet hopeful analysis and his plans for the future. I hope you will join me in helping him graduate and prepare for the future.

Our target is 600€, but please remember that even the smallest donation helps. Whether you can afford 500€, 50 or 5, it doesn’t matter. Together we will get there!
