Backpacker Medics (BPM) are sending a third Disaster Response Group over to Bangladesh to continue to ease pain and suffering on, who the UN has said to be, the most persecuted people on Earth; Rohingya people.

First hand accounts from our two previous teams have witnessed and treated machete wounds, gunshot wounds (in the back as people fled or were laying sleeping), and burns. The atrocities extend to patients with TB, children with life threating malnutrition and dehydration.

I will be heading to Bangladesh on the 27th of Novemeber to assist the Disaster Response Group, and I need your help to get me there.

There is no doubt that I decided to join the field of Paramedicine to do humanitarian work. After completing three years of Paramedical study, and being actively involved in BPM project Nepal for two years, I have gained insight in how to work in these situations. On this trip, I will be assisting experienced Emergency Nurses, Paramedics and Doctors to provide aid to those who desperately deserve it.

Who are Backpacker Medics?

Backpacker Medics is a platform for Paramedics and other pre-hospital workers to engage with the world of humanitarian work.

With a simple goal: to take effective medical care to those who need it most.

What are trip 3 objectives?

This will be a dual-purpose team with the following objectives:

It became increasingly apparent to team two that there was a large population of people within this camp who could not get help as they simply could not make it to appropriate health care. Patients were and are deteriorating into a critically ill condition, with no way to escape through the taxing camp conditions.

This lead to our solution of the “R-VAN’ (Rohingya Volunteer Ambulance Network). The creation of an ambulance network where locals are trained to treat and transport those that are basically too sick to make it to a health clinic.

The role of DRG Team 3 will be to work with our partners in Bangladesh (namely Care Intl. and Non-Violent Peace Force) to recruit a team of Rohingya volunteers and train them in basic first aid, patient assessment, extrication and transport. The initial team (around 20 volunteers) will be kitted-out with uniforms, First Aid kits, medical supplies and patient transport equipment e.g., stretchers.

The goal is to grow this team into a network capable of servicing the furthest reaches of the refugee camps. BPM will have an ongoing involvement with these teams in the coming months.

Backpacker medics is a registered charity. There are no paid positions and all people involved are self funded. We are always transparent where all our funds go.

Therefore, I would like to make the following points

Big thank you to my friends and family for the ongoing support. I really appreciate all that you do, and needless to say, these trips don’t happen without you!
