Health for Refugees in Thailand
Smyrna, Georgia, United States
The story of refugees in Thailand is unique, but the theme is becoming all too common. The phrase “Pakistani Christians in Thailand” stirs confusion. Pakistani, Christian and Thailand are not words we are used to seeing together. But this short phrase bears the weight of thousands of stories of untold heartache.
The World Watch Monitor has reported that, as of March 2017, there are about 11,500 refugees from Pakistan seeking safety and asylum in Thailand. Each of them has their own story, but they all have a common theme: persecution. They are being harassed and punished in ways unimaginable to us, simply because of their beliefs.
Persecution is, currently, not something I can comprehend. Unless someone burns down your home and everything you own, unless you and your family have to flee because your lives are at stake, I don’t think many of us could say we understand. Persecution may not be a reality for you and me, but it is the reality that brings Pakistani Christians running to Thailand.
Many Pakistani refugees have been stranded in Thailand for over four years. During this time, they have had access to practically nothing. Everything they have was either carried on their backs as they left their homes or given through charity. We will be attempting to help this community in many ways, as you can read below, but these funds are being raised specifically for their growing medical and health care issues.
