Medical Care: The Sameer Project in Honor of Mosab Ali

The healthcare situation in Gaza is a catastrophe. Medical aid has not entered through the border crossings since March 2 due to Israel’s blockade of the strip. Not only is lifesaving medication and supplies prohibited from entering, for the large part so are medical missions with foreign doctor and nurse delegates and medical evacuations have been few and far between, preventing those who need care from leaving. Yet the bombing, the shootings, the famine, the fighting chronic illnesses…none of this has stopped.

The Sameer Project x Translating Falasteen has been supplying medication, treatments, visits to doctors, wound care, making specialist appointments, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, and collecting documents to facilitate evacuations in both the North, Central, and South of Gaza for one year. Depending on the patient, location, and type of help needed we have been supporting medical care from our North and South campaigns. Now, as the situation is deteriorating and we are stepping up to do more, we have decided to make a focused “Medical Care” campaign.

In addition to our South medical point we are opening up a new medical point in the North, in the over crowded and underserved Port Camp. This medical point: the “Translating Falasteen x The Sameer Project Port Camp Medical Point” will have full service care including a doctor, nurses, a dentist, and a physiotherapist. After the initial installation costs it will be approximately $20,000 to keep it up and running and medication in stock.

Funds raised will be used on the following: * Purchase sourced medication from private pharmacies for patients referred to us * Support the soon to be opened Translating Falasteen x The Sameer Project Port Camp Medical Point, in the North * Supply medication not available in hospital pharmacies to patients * Purchase supplies like gauze, iodine, antiseptics, antibiotics, wheel chairs, crutches, walkers, etc. for those with “war injuries” * Fund our “Wound Care” project – traveling doctors and nurses who treat those who otherwise would be in the hospital, in their tents providing dressing changes, medication, and physiotherapy * In-clinic physiotherapy sessions for children suffering from brain atrophy and mental and physical delays * Specialized formula for malnourished babies and toddlers * Fortified nutritional supplements for malnourished children * Medical Days for skin diseases, new mothers, and injuries * Dental Days both mobile in camps and in clinic * Provide food or cash aid/e-wallets to “special circumstance” patients * Secure aid for hospitals that are not provided by the Ministry of Health

Everything we source, purchase, and provide is already in Gaza. But stocks are running out. This is why otherwise free medication and supplies are sold at exorbitant prices and must be searched for across numerous pharmacies and medical suppliers. We have the network of nurses and doctors to help us provide what others cant. This work should be done by large relief organizations and iNGOs but because of the difficulty operating in Gaza and since the borders are closed, many are rendered useless and it has fallen on The Sameer Project to fill the gaps left by them.

We carry out large scale campaigns to mitigate outbreaks of contagious diseases, we provide hospitals (such as Nasser) with formula, we bring fresh vegetables to cancer patients (like at Al Helou), and we give aid and assistance to those who are awaiting evacuation (also bringing them to our Refaat Alareer Camp) to keep them stable enough to travel.

We have named the campaign after our recently martyred South coordinator and camp manager, Mosab Ali, who also worked on his own mental health and physical rehabilitation project, focusing on healing those who are suffering. He would often come across those injured and too poor to afford tretemnemt and call our doctors to help. He ran The Refaat Alareer Camp and managed 30+ families with critically ill and injured members. And Mosab himself had a son who was medically evacuated to Qatar with his wife and other two children. It is in his honor that we continue to offer medical support to those in need.

We spend on average $5,000 every 10 days on medication for patients, $3,500 every restock of the medical point in the South, $10,000 every 1.5-2 months on our wound care project, and more expenses based on the availability and cost of vegetable parcels, formula, supplements, and supplies for our medical days. Each Medical Day whether the North or South averages around $1,000 and we host several per week. Every day produces more wounded, the sick get sicker, and those with chronic diseases suffer. Children are dying as they await evacuation. Cancer patients have no palliative care. Painkillers are scarce. We cannot solve many of these problems, only aid and delegations entering will (not to mention a ceasefire and opening the borders), but with your help we can provide some medical care, what is available, to SAVE LIVES in Gaza.

Salam,

We recently launched our Medical Campaign in order to have a specific amount to spend on targeted healthcare initiatives. During the first couple of weeks as we raised money we conducted certain medical projects under their previous North and South campaigns until we garner enough support to pay for all medical expenses out of this campaign. South medicine purchases for individual cases was paid out of the South and Central campaign up until July 7, and medical days were from this campaign. In the North, medical days were covered by the North campaign up until July 7, but the new medical point and medication purchases were paid from this pot.

South Medical Expenses – $8,786

In the South, the team is on a schedule to host a Medical Day every other day, three times per week. These medical days range from general care, dermatological diseases, malnutrition, and treatment and education for pregnant and breast feeding mothers. We purchased a stock of medication to last through the medical days but will replenish it if we need more. The medical days cost 26,260 shekels or $8,693 after 10% bank transfer transaction fees. In the last 10 days a team of one doctor and one nurse carried out medical days at:

– General medical campaign serving 400 cases in Ana Insan Camp in Deir al-Balah – General medical campaign at al-Sheqaqi Camp in al-Nuseirat targeting 87 cases – General medical campaign in al-Shouka camp, targeting 270 cases in Mawasi Khan Younis – General medical campaign at Al-Qassem camp, targeting 300 casesin Nuseirat.

One of the scheduled medical campaigns was not conducted due to unavailability of suitable space. We have been facing this challenge lately as displacements are leading to overcrowding of “safe zones” and the camps in them, so we cannot even find a place to put up a tent for a day long event. Stay tuned in the up coming weeks as we have an idea that might solve this logistics challenge and bring a whole new level of healthcare access to all. Transportation to and from these medical days averages about 50-70 shekels, so about 220 shekels with 40% cash commission for $93.

Hospital Support – $3,648

Since the medical needs are so vast and so serious all over Gaza, our new strategy has been to try and work directly with hospitals as much as possible. This way we can ensure the goods we provide are received by those most in need. We purchased 10 mattresses for 1,000 shekels that were delivered to Nasser Hospital and 84 boxes of nutritional supplements that were delivered to Al Aqsa Hospital for 4,000 shekels. The North team also sent down 50 cans of Cerelac for Nasser Hospital as well that we bought for 120 shekels each, so 6,000 shekels. These good provided to the hospitals cost a total of $3,648 with 10% commission.

Launch of North Medical Point – $28,680

In the North the big achievement was opening up a brand new medical point to serve the Port Camp. This area has over 15,000 residents with no medical support. We bought the large field tent up from the South that we had previously purchased for a phenomenal rate. The tent cost was 2,200 shekels, the installation was 600 shekels and transportation of it for 200 shekels for $1,000 – bank transfer for the tent and the rest is cash. The medical point has a full time doctor, 2 full time nurses, a dentist who works 4 days, and a physiotherapist who works 3 days. To get the clinic started we purchased:

Medical supplies and medication: 26,775 (cash), 36,146 (bank) [for two months] Cabinet: 700 (cash) Table: 400 (bank) Medical bed: 750 (cash), 750 (bank) Dental material: 4,000 (cash), 4,000 (bank) Other supplies: 700 (cash), 280 (bank)

For a total of 33,225 cash at 40% commission equaling $14,025…and 41,176 shekels and bank transfer fees at 10% equaling $13,655…for a total of $27,680 for opening day. Since opening we have served 500-700 patients daily, for general health questions, exams, medication dispensing, dental work, and physiotherapy.

___________

Thanks to your generous support, we were able to achieve so much in a short period of time and provide medical relief to thousands of people in Gaza. The expenses so far have been $41,114 / £30,500. This doesn’t include the doctor / nurses salaries.

We need your support to keep going as pharmacies are asking for half the payment in cash meaning we will have to pay more in commission.

Please donate and share our campaign.

ayad ayad

You say that you are Samir’s campaign and you buy medicine for the wounded and sick. I have a list of my wounded and I need to cover their treatment expenses. Please buy the medicine for them. Can one of the campaign officials speak to me and provide him with a list of the wounded? You are just thieves who trade in the blood of the people of Gaza. Every dollar that reaches the link does not reach those who deserve it. My appeal to all donors is that they are thieves and do not deliver this money to those who deserve it. I have appealed to them repeatedly in all their campaigns to provide them with lists of my wounded and lists of displaced people in northern Gaza, and they did not respond. All you see is a media show and an exploitation of your emotions. Send your donations to reliable parties, and by God you will be held accountable.
