Hey y’all! Rian here – I have created this fundraiser to crowdsource donations and support for my recovery from top surgery, scheduled for April 11th.

I am trying to raise $3500. The surgery itself is expected to cost me $2000, aka my entire insurance deductible. I anticipate taking 2-3 weeks off from work minimum, for recovery. Thankfully, I am able to take time off from work. However, my job does not provide benefits/PTO, so the remaining $1500 of my goal is meant to cover the income I will lose by taking time off work.

Before surgery, my financial situation has been a manageable paycheck to paycheck. As the weeks have passed since my surgery was scheduled in January, I had hoped to save up more funds, but I am exactly where I normally am at the end of the month, with one paycheck in my account about to be spent on rent, bills, and groceries. I have managed to accrue $500 in savings. Other than this, I do not have a further safety net to fall back on. So, I am making this fundraiser, albeit a little bit late in the game. I was hoping that I didn’t have to. However, I have reached a point where I am afraid that if I do not ask for help now, I may end up in a much more drastic financial situation at the end of April.

I know there are a lot of people asking for help in the world right now. I wish that I did not have to. I appreciate any contribution you can make, and, if we know each other and you want to reach out with non-monetary forms of support, I would appreciate that just as much. Advice and information from those of you who have undergone top surgery is especially helpful. I would also appreciate if you can share my fundraiser with others even if you cannot contribute.

It is an especially challenging time to be trans. The only reason I can access this surgery is because it is covered by the ACA. The current administration is trying to prevent ACA plans from being required to cover gender-affirming care. Currently, there is a window to leave a comment against this proposed change. That window closes on April 11, the day of my surgery. If you can do nothing else, I hope you will take this opportunity to leave a comment and support access to healthcare for all – the goal of legislation like this is always an attempt to restrict our rights to bodily autonomy – affecting ALL people, trans or otherwise.

This was a night where I felt joy and hope and love and nourishment, surrounded by community who collectively created the banner pictured, expanding on the message: “We have always been here… and we will continue to celebrate.” Thank you for supporting me, my journey & recovery, so I can continue to be here, continue to celebrate my trans community, and continue to broadcast messages of love and resistance every Tuesday night at 7pm.
