Medically Evacuated Children from Gaza Need our Help

TLDR:

Siblings Jana and Jehad and their parents were recently evacuated from Gaza to the US. The evacuation was deemed medically urgent so that the children can receive life-saving medical treatments that are no longer available in Gaza. Thankfully they are now here and receiving medical care, and we are raising funds to support their family.

Background Information:

The two children have a rare genetic disorder – phenylketonuria (PKU). They rely on regular medical monitoring and a restricted diet paired with special “medical foods”. Untreated, PKU leads to a dangerous buildup of the amino acid phenylalanine in the blood stream and brain. That eventually causes brain damage.

For over a year, the children did not receive medical care or have access to the diet needed to avoid accumulation of phenylalanine in the brain. Multiple partners worked together to support the family’s evacuation so the children’s medical needs can be met. We are thrilled that the family has arrived safely and the children are now receiving treatment at one of the leading treatment clinics for PKU in the US. Here, they have access to the medical foods that they need to support their healthy development.

The Ask:

Please help us welcome and support this wonderful family! The children’s medical treatment in the US may extend for up to five years. However, the terms of the family’s visa prohibit the parents from working while in the US. Your support will help cover the family’s costs of living. Your contributions will go directly to the family to use as needed, including housing costs, transportation, groceries, warm winter clothes, and more.

Our immediate goal is to make sure their first-year’s expenses are secured. That would be about $30,000, but the hope is that we can raise more funds to secure their whole medical stay (up to five years).

Many in the community have stepped up already to welcome Jana and Jehad and their parents to the US, and now we invite you to join us in welcoming their family by contributing to this fundraising campaign. No amount is too little or too large. We’re hoping each will contribute according to their abilities, fully recognizing that our abilities to help differ greatly and that we’re all pulled in so many different directions.
