Hey y’all! My name is V (he/they), and I am an Atlanta-based cultural worker, artist, and facilitator who has the immense joy and privilege of stewarding ATL Trans Guide. What started as a by-us-for-us resource guide 2+ years ago has grown into a vibrant, ever-expanding community of trans (and especially Black) people supporting each other through a peer support space, study group, newsletter, and grassroots mutual aid crowdfunding. The ethos of ATL Trans Guide is rooted in the principles of mutual aid, anti-fascism, and community self-determination. This project follows in a long tradition of Black trans people collectivizing our resources to survive by any means necessary. When threatened with erasure, we have no choice but to stand up and fight back! It is through this community that I have developed friendship with a wonderful Georgia-based, working-class, Disabled, Queer, Non-binary African American person (pronouns: ve / ver / vis) who is a brilliant artist, loving community member, and lupus warrior. For safety and security purposes, my friend — who has consented to having funds raised on ver behaf — has chosen to remain anonymous. My friend lives with a rare form of Lupus and recently lost a critical part of ver health insurance coverage. Ve has since been crowdfunding for suvival in order to afford the exorbitant costs of medication and medical bills from doctor’s appointments and hospitalizations. This fundraiser is being created as a way to support ver ongoing need for financial support. Ve lives in a small, conservative town and lacks in-person Queer / trans community. Connecting virtually has meant the world to both of us, and I am honored to support my friend in whatever ways I can through financial solidarity and social support.
