My name is Abdel Halim Khalil Saleh.

I am 43 years old, and my wife, Yasmin Mohamed Saleh, is 37. We have four children: our eldest son, Alaa, is 14 years old, Mohamed is 13, Ahmed is 10, and our youngest, Habiba, is 9.

We are a family from Rafah City in the Gaza Strip.

I begin my story with a word from my pampered 9-year-old daughter: “Dad, I want to go to heaven.” When I ask her why, she says, “So I can eat everything I want.”

As for my son Alaa, he says, “Dad, death is better than humiliation.” These are the most painful words.

I used to live in Rafah in my new home, which I had only inhabited for one month. It cost me approximately $150,000. Then the war of October 7th erupted. During the first week, there was heavy shelling near my home, causing partial damage to it. As the shelling intensified in our area, we were forced to flee for the first time—my wife, my four children, and I—to a supposedly safe area.

We stayed at a relative’s house, but after only one week, the area also became unsafe. We were displaced a second time to the Mawasi area in Rafah.

That’s where the real suffering began: a lack of clean drinking water, a shortage of food supplies, and a lack of hygiene essentials like shampoo and soap. This led to my children developing rashes and infectious diseases due to poor hygiene, malnutrition, and severe cold.

We endured two months of these harsh conditions. Despite this, the occupation didn’t leave us alone and ordered us to evacuate once again. For the third time, we fled, this time to the Mawasi area in Khan Younis. The process of displacement itself was a hardship—scarce transportation, overcrowded roads, and damaged routes added to our suffering.

When we arrived in the Mawasi area in Khan Younis, the shock was overwhelming. The area was unfit for human habitation, with no access to basic or drinking water. The severe cold and the diseases we were battling compounded our misery.

Adding to our struggles is my illness (asthma) and my wife’s deteriorating health. She suffers from multiple conditions: gastroesophageal reflux, stomach infection, mitral valve prolapse, and atrial fibrillation, requiring continuous treatment. Her condition has worsened due to the lack of necessary medication and nutritious food.

My eldest son, who is 14, also suffers from an enlarged lymph node in his neck and needs surgery to remove it.

Unfortunately, we lack even the basic necessities of life. Despite all of this, we’ve adapted to these dire circumstances. Yet, our suffering continues to this very day.
