After years of struggle with homelessness, gender dysphoria, an eating disorder and other severe health conditions, amid a housing crisis and a crumbling (de-funded) healthcare system, Jams is in urgent need of dental surgery. Jams is a trans woman and activist living in Bristol – those that know her will know that she is an incredibly loving person who goes out of her way to care for the people around her. She is extremely anxious about asking for help but unfortunately has run out of other options. Please consider donating and sharing this crowdfund so that she can begin to put her face (and life) back together.

“i have been on and off homeless for the last 8-9 years and have struggled accessing dental health care during this time.

It used to be you could get dental work at the hospital by letting dental students learn on you, i eventually found out about this service and was able to see them but only once it became an emergency. It had gotten so bad I had to have 2 teeth next to each other removed. This is now the main cause of problems with years of trying to save up but not being able to afford the private healthcare to stabilise the area (this is not covered by NHS).

Having a large gap in your teeth means the jawbone is no longer supported by the teeth’s roots so the bone shrinks and becomes weaker, there is now a dent in my jaw where the bone has shrunk. The teeth above started falling down with nothing to bite against and due to the jaw bone weakening the teeth next to the gap have started tilting in towards my tongue. I also have a wisdom tooth next to the gap that has come out at 45 degrees, half dozen teeth are chipped and some problems with the root canal and crown the students gave me.

This all obviously can bring me alot of distress as if im not in pain i will still be incredibly anxious while eating trying to not hurt myself or do any more damage. when the teeth decided to shift dramatically over a short period recently or whenever I unexpectedly bite anything even slightly hard, im left with a deep fear and dread.”

Jams has been told that there is a risk of her jaw collapsing, and more teeth falling out but it’s difficult to get consistent responses about the timescale in which this could happen. It is clear that the longer she leaves it the greater the risk however, and she’s already been waiting years. She was given an electric toothbrush and avoids certain hard foods but she needs surgery as soon as possible.

“I’ve run out of other options and really want to avoid a situation where my whole jaw collapses, irreversibly changing my face.”

These costings are based on a treatment plan Jams was given a few years ago, however, the condition of her jaw has worsened over these years so more work may be necessary, and the prices may have gone up. For example online it says a bone graft in the UK can be anywhere between £200 and £4000.

CBCT Scan: £100

Bone graft: £800

Implants: £1,500 each (x2)

Crowns: £1,100 each (x2)

As well as additional charges for appointments and scans, there are also a number of chipped teeth and issues around a false crown which will require treatment. Jams may also need orthodontistry to pull her teeth back into place which can cost between £2000 and £6000. It is therefore difficult to give exact costings and in the unlikely event that we raise more money than she needs for dental work she will use the surplus for other healthcare needs such as trans and mental healthcare not covered by the NHS.
