I’m Mike and I’m here to raise money for my Ugandan friend Mutte Robert. He is a kind and caring young man in South Uganda who helps homeless children, and set up his own ramshackle orphanage in Jinja, using only his earnings as a labourer. For a few years now he’s successfully managed to feed and clothe about 30 kids – some very young. He finally got a licence to care for the children from government, calling his refuge Children Empowerment Uganda (not to be confused with a different charity, Children Empowerment Africa). Some unpaid volunteers do help him with duties, but when he gets ill, savings soon dry up and there’s no government support as they are swamped with need.

Mutte is in hospital with severe pain in the gall bladder and treatment costs could amount to up to £500 sterling. Compared with private health care in Europe or USA it’s not much but in Uganda it could save his life and get him fit to work again. He’s no shirker and always gives 100%.

Mutte must get back to health if he is to continue with the youngsters. He is thoroughly dedicated and never approached us for financial help (unlike a lot of scammers sadly in the developing world). If he can recover his health we’ll be trying to set the school up to be self sufficient, and we’re hoping we can raise enough to get some investment in the school. Absolutely every penny will go to Mutte’s treatment and Children Empowerment Uganda. We’ve been transferring from separate UK bank accounts for a year now and forwarding to the school from there. We cover any fees ourselves which aren’t much.
