Marhaba, my name is Kate. I am deeply honoured to support my friend Mohammed and his wonderful family in Gaza.

Mohammed’s situation remains critical, and he and his family urgently need our continued support as the conditions in Gaza worsen.

Mohammed is blind, and the ongoing conflict has severely impacted his health and stability. The lack of medical treatments has been extremely challenging for him and his family. Despite numerous attempts to get medical assistance to him through NGOs, these treatments have been confiscated at the border.

With the situation in Gaza continually declining, they need our financial assistance more than ever to stay stable and healthy. His mother, Hanan, constantly worries about the health, happiness and safety of Mohammed and his sisters, in particular, Nour and Lojin. Nour has suffered hearing loss, and Lojin has been traumatized by the constant bombardment. Any help you can provide would make a significant positive impact on their lives as they strive to survive in hopes of the borders opening up again.

Mohammed would like to share his story with you…

Marhaba, my name is Mohammed Mahani; I am 22 years old and from Gaza. And I am blind.

I come from a beautiful, caring and talented family, with thanks to our parents, my Dad, Adel Khamis, and my Mum, Hanan Hasan.

When the war started, my family and I lived happily in our home. We were looking forward to the future. My older brother Oday looks after me, he is a Medical Equipment Engineer, and had started his own clothing store.

My older sister Nour was in the last semester studying Information Technology at University, and our middle sister, Retaj, was in the 11th grade; she was selected to study at a specialist school for creative talents, where she studied journalism and media; she has had several distinguished press and television interviews. Our little sister, Lojin, is 12 years old and was in a primary school, which she loved.

Early in the war our house was bombed, but we thankfully came out from under the rubble.

We fled to the city of Deir al-Balah, south of Wadi Gaza, hoping to leave behind the bombing, destruction, and hunger. We were displaced to schools and tents, and we have had to move many times. There is very little left to eat in Gaza, and there is no water.

My sister, Nour, has suffered hearing loss because of the intensity of the explosions surrounding us. Our little sister, Lojin, has suffered trauma due to the bombing of our house and the horrific scenes she has witnessed.

The medication I take to treat my eyes due to complications from my blindness is no longer available to me. And diseases surround my body. During this year of unending war, I have not been able to bear the pain. Smoke and the rubble everywhere cause pain and irritation in my eyes, and negatively affect my health.

My family and I pray for the day when we will be able to leave Gaza for safety and medical treatment, for myself and my sisters. We have been in this war for a year without any aid or medical relief.

I am appealing to you. Can you please have mercy on us. For anyone concerned with human rights and the rights of the disabled, I ask for you to help my family and me. Help us to access the medical help we need and evacuate safely so we can start to rebuild our lives together.

I thank you for your kindness, knowing that your support through a donation or sharing our story with your family and friends will give us the chance to look forward and rebuild our lives together.

Shukran, in hope, Mohammed
