Rotary Club Footscray – Urgent Medical Supplies and Equipment for Ayder Hospital in Tigray
Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital
Mekelle, Tigray region of Ethiopia
Healthcare in Tigray is in dire need of urgent support for medical supplies and equipment, following the impact of the 2020-2022 conflict. The collapse of the healthcare system in Tigray is severe, such that hospitals have had to halt critical services including dialysis, diabetic care, cancer treatment and vaccination services.
Ayder Hospital is the largest hospital in the Tigray region and the only hospital with surgery facilities in the region. It is one of the few referral hospitals in Ethiopia and provides referral and non-referral services to over 9 million of the population in its catchment areas of Tigray, Afar and Northeastern parts of the Amhara region. A once state-of-the-art facility providing world class care to people all over the region, the hospital is now in shambles after the war. With a severe shortage of medical supplies and equipment, staff are forced to watch patients suffer or die unnecessarily from treatable problems. Due to lack of options, single-use items such gloves, surgical equipment and chest drains are washed and reused by hospital staff.
“The scale of human suffering really has few parallels.” Thomas McHale, Deputy Director with Physicians for Human Rights.
Rotary Club of Footscray in conjuction with the Donations in Kind (DIK) program receives a large amount of working equipment suitable for reuse in overseas locations. Rotary Club of Footscray is preparing to send desperately needed essential supplies to Ayder Hospital through the DIK program with the support of Australia Tigray Alliance (ATA). Transporting this requires funds for shipping to the Horn of Africa. The cost for the 40ft shipping container to the Port of Djibouti is $20,000.
With the Rotary Club support DIK has already sent containers to the Horn of Africa in recent years, regions including Somali Regional State of Ethiopia, Harar, JigJiga and surrounding areas. The contents have included hospital beds, dialysis machines, surgical instruments, school desks and school clothes, making a huge difference for those in need.
