Our daughter, Clara, has a genetic disease so rare that it doesn’t even have a name. She is one of a few hundred people in the world identified as having a mutation (or “change”) on her STXBP1 gene. As a result, she will have lifelong physical and intellectual disabilities. Clara is a gift and has taught us more than we could have ever imagined about what it means to live joyfully, celebrate life’s small victories, and love those around you. We owe her, and others who are impacted by genetic diseases, the chance to live their very best life – and in many cases save their life. If gene therapy and other genetic breakthroughs can do this, then let’s start putting one foot in front of the other!
Over the years, thanks to your support, Clara Inspired has raised over $100,000! Nearly all of this has been donated to clinical studies at Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University. We have run marathons, ultra marathons, played music for 8 hours straight, and have benefited from many of you who have conducted your own Clara Inspired fundraisers. We are so thankful, but we are not finished!
For this year’s fundraiser, Clara Inspired has formed a six-person marathon team in order to collectively PUSH Clara 26.2 miles in an adaptive stroller! That’s right, Clara will be “rolling” all of those miles with us. It’s going to be a challenge not only for us but also for her. Our motto continues to be “We can do hard things!” and this is no exception.
The majority of the funds collected thus far have been donated to organizations that are deeply involved in researching, treating, and curing genetic diseases. In 2020 and 2022, Clara Inspired contributed two separate $30,000 amounts to Weill Cornell Medicine for a clinical trial related to STXBP1. In 2021, we awarded a $31,000 gift to Columbia University for their vital multi-modal research in the Institute of Genomic Medicine.
Our goal is to help accelerate breakthroughs, and one day cure, genetic diseases within our children’s lifetime. That’s a long time and seems really hard, right? That’s exactly the point. Together, we can do hard things!
