Who are we?
TeamMED Uganda is a Monash University student-run not-for-profit organisation that aims to both encourage medical students to become actively involved in healthcare volunteer initiatives and to fight global health inequality by working together with developing communities and empowering them to improve their health outcomes. Since our inception in 2011, we have worked with two partner communities on a yearly basis: the Suubi Centre in the Lwengo district, and the The Centre for Youth Development Initiatives (CFYDDI) near Kampala.
Every January, six medical students from Monash University visit two locations in Uganda. The trip will not be happening due to COVID-19 restrictions, however TeamMED Uganda continues to support these communities.
Where does your money go?
100% of the donations will go directly to improving health outcomes for those in the Lwengo District and CFYDDI. In particular, these communities are in need of medications and laboratory equipment to meet their unique health requirements. In the climate of COVID-19, there is a likelihood that a portion will also go towards personal protective equipment (PPE) and hygiene products. As an organisation, we focus on allocating our resources in response to relevant local expertise, as we recognise their comprehensive understanding of healthcare in Uganda.
Why should you help?
As an organisation, we are standing to combat the immense health disparity experienced in Uganda, and hope to move towards a more equitable future. Rural Ugandan villages lack the sufficient resources to meet their health requirements, and debilitating communicable diseases such as HIV, syphilis, typhoid fever, and H. pylori pose serious risks to both children and adults in these communities. We are lucky to have access to the highest quality of healthcare in Australia. As TeamMED, we recognise that this inequity is unacceptable and aim to close the gap in our partner communities. With your help, these easily preventable diseases can be detected and treated within the communities of rural Uganda.
TeamMED recognises the potential for COVID-19 travel restrictions to impede our on-the-ground operation in Uganda. However, the fight against disease doesn’t stop in the face of COVID. Our partnership with these communities means they rely on our organisation to continue their operations at the current capacity. Each year, the majority of our impact comes from the tireless work of our volunteers in Australia and the generosity of your donations. This means that, while it would be disappointing to not work with our partners face-to-face, all contributions will have the same critical impact in Uganda.
Whether you can afford to donate a lot or a little, we and our partner communities are incredibly grateful for your contribution to a cause that is very close to our hearts. Thank you.
