Lesvos is currently undergoing significant changes when it comes to the living reality for refugees and asylum-seekers. While thousands of people have left Lesvos in the last year, there are new and arguably more complex needs emerging. Stoppages in health insurance, lack of food provisions, a lack of financing, exacerbation of medical needs and trouble navigating social services are creating unforetold barriers.
There continue to be new arrivals in Lesvos, though numbers have dropped dramatically. Regardless of numbers, we see that everyone here has the right to access quality medical services: access to primary and emergency medical services, diagnostics, and psychological support in well-equipped facilities. For this to happen, we need to build up our current capacity by working with other actors in the field. When vulnerable people have access to medical care, a basic need is met. We want to support individuals to ensure they receive as holistic of care as possible, regardless of their circumstance.
Through local partnerships, we have been able to facilitate secondary medical care, provide humanitarian and compassionate interpretation and translation through our team of approximately thirty trained interpreters, and offer social support to hundreds of refugees. This program has been successful – and we need it to keep going. Why?
Because through our programs, we have been able to provide medical results to patients which have allowed them to access life-saving medical care. We work seven days per week, providing the logistics and translations required to support refugees. Through working with other actors all across Greece, we have managed to support more than four hundred individuals. Many of them were able to continue their journey having received the highest quality care available.
Not every medical case has a happy ending, but we believe that supporting patients throughout a medical problem is one of the most universal and basic services one can offer. Whether it is accompanying a patient for dialysis to their appointments, offering translations to diagnose terminal illnesses, supporting mothers who are in labour, or facilitating advanced medical procedures – we believe in being with the patient through it all. With your support, we can continue to offer these services through collaborating with other medical actors, providing transportation as needed, paying for medication for those who are unable to and doing our best to make sure needs are met in a compassionate way.
We are proud to be a refugee-focused and refugee-driven organization, with more than 90% of our volunteers coming from a refugee background. As a close team, we are constantly able to get feedback from those we’ve helped – to hear wonderful stories after they’ve left Lesvos and to celebrate each patient’s personal and medical success. We have made connectiosn with other actors as well as patients who we will never forget and for whom we are constantly striving to provide for. Please help us to bridge the gaps and continue to help individuals on Lesvos and beyond.
