Tiaré’s Story
Tiaré was a bright, healthy, happy, and engaging three-year-old who loved swimming, ballet and gymnastics.
But a routine procedure to remove her tonsils and adenoids changed everything for Tiaré and our family. A viral infection at the time of Tiaré’s operation caused a rare neurological brain disease called acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE).
No one can prepare you for something like this. ANE is very aggressive and caused extensive damage to large areas of Tiaré’s brain. The illness and damaged it caused Tiaré’s brain was over and above the worse thing we could have imagined. Tiaré nearly died in ICU from brain swelling.
When Tiaré regained consciousness, she was unable to see, speak or move her arms and legs with purpose. It was so unexpected, incredibly frightening and broke our hearts to see our little girl had changed so much from one day to the next.
Slowly but surely, Tiaré made small improvements, giving us hope that Tiaré might one day be able to walk and talk again.
A highlight for Tiaré during her hospitalisation was meeting her favourite musician, Chris Martin. Chris was very kind and considerate, gifting Tiaré with presents, dedicating “magic” to Tiaré at his concert, lifting all our spirits and having we, her parents, at the concert as guests.
Tiaré’s “Cold Play” CDs were instrumental in her speech therapy sessions, helping her regain some speech.
How ANE Impacts Tiaré’s Life
Life is very different for Tiaré, now. The brain damage has severely affected her mobility, vision and communication.
Tiaré has spasticity in her legs. Spasticity prevents Tiaré from walking; her heels struggle to touch the ground, and her ankles are unstable. Tiaré relies on a wheelchair for mobility. As Tiaré grows, the spasticity can cause premature aging of her joints, pain, contractures and deformities.
Tiaré’s speech difficult to form but improving. Socially it has been difficult for Tiaré to keep up with the fluidity of play due to mobility, vision and communication difficulties. She is rarely invited to birthday parties. Teachers find it hard to transfer Tiaré, so at recess and lunch she often sits in her wheelchair while other school children enjoy the play equipment, instead of being able to actively participate. Tiaré often says “I wish I could walk”.
Tiaré’s ability to capacity build is limited by the reduction in function of her left hand and arm. Tiaré’s lack of functional vision restricts her learning and impacts on her ability to know where she is in space.
ANE has impacted our family financially, emotionally and physically. ANE has impacted our career choices, housing, the way we spend time with family and friends. ANE has impacted the availability and quality of time we can spend Tiaré’s little sister and has also taken from her little sister the abilities of her beloved big sister and playmate to interact, play, teach and protect her.
A Life-Changing Opportunity
Tiaré has just turned 9 and is at a critical point in her development where treatment will have the greatest impact on her life.
A combination of Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery and cord blood transfusion could change Tiaré’s future and give her the opportunity for much greater mobility, more functional use of her hands and arms, improved vision and less pain and deformities.
SDR surgery can give Tiaré the opportunity to live with less pain and more mobility by preventing the messages sent from her brain that causing spasticity in her legs. SDR results in improvements in sitting, standing, walking, and balance control in walking. Tiaré has been deemed appropriate for SDR surgery by British neurosurgeon, Mr Kristian Aquilina.
Another area of medical research that can improve Tiaré’s recovery is cord blood transfusion. Tiaré could gain access to a government cord blood study using blood type and HLA matched cord blood. The treatment will require two infusions and two trips to Russia 6 months apart for a week per infusion. Parents whose children have taken part in a Duke University (USA) study, with the same protocol, report their children have made physical gains outside of the normal progression for a child with their disability.
The improvements gained by children in these studies are relevant to deficits Tiaré has and could lead to improvements in her quality of life and access to education, community and friendships.
We hope Tiaré will receive her first cord blood infusion late November 2019.
With SDR surgery we are aiming for Tiaré’s legs to be free of spasticity pain, avoid deformity and to improve her posture. With cord blood transfusion we are aiming for an improvement in Tiaré’s functional use of her legs, left arm/hand, and her vision.
It is important Tiaré has the cord blood transfusion and surgery ASAP because this is a critical stage in her development when the treatment will have the greatest impact on her life. SDR surgery and cord blood transfusion promise the best return of function for Tiaré during this time. We are very excited at the prospects of the gains Tiaré can make during this important period of her development.
How You Can Help Tiaré
Any donation you can give will help to transform Tiaré’s life and be very much appreciated.
We need to raise $149,000 by September 2021.
This will cover SDR surgery in the UK including the pre and post-operative assessments, surgery, our stay in hospital and two weeks of intensive physiotherapy sessions.
It will also cover cord blood transfusion treatment in Russia which requires two infusions and two trips to Russia 6 months apart for a week per infusion.
Please share this page to spread the word and help us reach our goal.
If you can help in any other way, please contact us on [email protected]
UPDATES:
This brave kid got a cannula put in her arm for her blood test today and in preparation for her infusion of UCB! Getting close!!! We are all feeling so incredibly grateful for the opportunity!
Update:
The cord blood transfusions went well. Thanks for all the message of support and inquiry as to how Tiaré faired. So far Tiaréhas been a more chatty and wanting me to get her up to help her walk. Then wanting to walk really fast! We spent the afternoon doing therapy in the hotel. She had a small skin reaction to the sticky bandage. The principal investigator came to the hotel with topical antihistamine and the skin has improved. Here she is receiving her transfusion.
Update:
We returned to Australia from Samara, Russia. Tiaré has returned to school and therapy to take advantage of the benefits of cord blood infusion and brain plasticity. Tiaré’s Feldenkrais practitioner noted strong improvements with long sitting. Tiaré’s school physiotherapist noted continued improved sitting balance. The school physiotherapist also commented Tiaré’s left hand seems to be more open and she is taking more notice of her left side now. Tiaré’s speech therapist also saw lots of gains, which wasn’t a big surprise as Tiaré has a drive for speech, so I expect Tiaré’s drive would influence the benefits seen from cord blood infusion. Tiaré is currently doing 1hour OT intensive at NAPA with Laura before school each day, for a three-week period. It’s the first time Tiaré and Laura have worked together and we are very impressed with the knowledge and extra effort Laura has put into understanding Tiaré’s challenges. We can see Laura developing a lovely relationship with Tiaré and we look forward to seeing the gains they make together.
Some examples of Tiaré’s speech:
Ari getting ready go to Frozen 2. I’m going shopping. Let me do my thing.
Excuse me Dr Brown Bear, Tee-Tee really sick. Tee-Tee better… oh gooooood!
Doctor game for ages.
A for Arianna’s name.
UPDATE: May 2020
Thinking of all Tiaré’s supporters around the world. We hope you, your friends and families are safe and well. It has been a busy start to 2020. In January, the whole family went to Adelaide for Tiaré to train with a robotic (Lokomat) to capitalise on her first cord blood transfusion. We were impressed with the strength, endurance and coordination the Lokomat afforded Tiaré. After 3 weeks, Tiaré was able to train up to walk with the Lokomat 1.835 km, with a top speed of 1.6 km/hr.
Lokomat and HLA matched cord blood transfusion in combination with Tiaré’s regular therapy has been great for Tiaré’s hips, cardiovascular health, increase in strength of leg muscles, active stretch of leg muscles, improved control of torso, and head.
Since Tiaré had her first of two HLA matched cord blood transfusions, her speech, ability to sit nicely in a chair and ability to multitask has also improved. Tiaré can lay on her stomach comfortably on a scooter board, which is quite remarkable. Previously she was too uncomfortable; she would object and persist in rolling of until successful.
Tiaré sometimes stretches her left hand above her head when she is laying on her back stretching her right arm. Tiaré is improving her left arm exercises and engaging a bit more with left hand. Her right arm is extremely strong. Her right hand is showing improved dexterity.
Tiaré is also training towards using canes.
Tiaré’s masseuse said the texture of her muscles has improved. He was able to access between muscle he previously could not. Tiaré can long sit, left and right side sit and cross-legged sit independently. At present, Tiaré still needs assistance to be moved into these positions. Tiaré’s OT noted improvements with the muscles of the left arm (hand and arm more relaxed). Tiaré’s clonus (rhythmic muscle spasms in the lower leg) has also improved. We are really proud of Tiaré, all she has accomplished so far and the maturity with which she does it.
Tiaré is committed to her training and is continuing to gain strength. We have incorporated the Galileo Vibration plate to improve the strength and efficiency of Tiaré’s training. It is important for Tiaré to be strong before surgery. Tiaré is also able to count by 2s, 5s, and 10s with little prompt. We are also continuing to notice improvements in her speech.
At present, Tiaré’s international clinical trial and surgery are delayed for 6-12 months due to the international COVID-19 pandemic. With drought, bushfires, floods and now an international pandemic, fundraising has been very difficult. We are still doing our best and appreciated your support and interest in Tiaré’s Wish. If you are able to hold a fundraiser on Tiaré’s behalf, we would be very grateful.
Thanks for following, donating and sharing the link with your connection to Tiaré.

Recycling fundraiser
Our friends Nat and Matty Cummings are working on a fundraiser using a recycled bottle and can scheme. Great for the environment and great for Tiare’s Wish. Here are the details!
Lupin Heat Packs
Lupin bags! Lupin seeds are lighter in weight than wheat, which is traditionally used for heat bags. When heated over time, wheat heat bags develop a “cooked” odour, whereas this is much less noticeable with lupin. Lupin bags retain heat longer than wheat. Although a little more expensive product than wheat, lupin seed is definitely a superior product. Use either warm or cold for relaxation. The Lupin bags are available for $30 for pick up in Sydney. The weight is 1kg. If you’re interested in paying for postage, Australia post packs up to 5kg are $9.20 each.

UTA22 run by Josh (Tiare’s Dad) here is his take
“UTA22 done and dusted! It was a great course with alot of stairs. I did suffer alot of quad cramping about 12km in, something that doesn’t usually happen to me very often. Thank goodness i got through. I must say it was quite emotional going through some areas as they were where we visited as a family just before Tiaré fell ill. It did give me some drive to get things done. I finished the course in just over 4 hours.” Your support for Josh running the UTA raised $2480
The Canberra Times Marathon, April 11th 2021
Our wonderful friends, Ian North and Annie North (with a pram), ran events at The Canberra Times Marathon in support of Tiaré’s wish. We are very appreciative of the hard training and the juggling of life involved in order to fit the training and Marathon to raise funds and promote awareness of the fundraising.

Photography fundraiser
Tiaré’s Wish received a very generous $2275 donation from Naremburn Early Learning Centre from a fundraiser they held for T. Jake (the director) and Durrah (teacher and the photographer) organised to do the childrens photos in-house last year, instead of using an external company, which meant they were able to donate a sizeable amount of funds to Tiaré’s Wish, without any extra out of pocket to the families. So clever! We are super grateful for the amazing support Naremburn ELC has provided Tiaré’s Wish. What an incredible bunch of people. They are also collecting drink bottles and containers for the recycling fundraiser! Here is a photo of the gorgeous group:
