The disparity in health and life-expectancy between India and Australia is alarming. In 2018, World Health Organisation statistics revealed a 14 year discrepancy in life expectancy between the two countries. The rising instances of drug and alcohol abuse in students in Northern India does little to help this situation. In Himachal Pradesh, 27% of youths are involved in drug abuse and the number is rising day by day.

We’re 7 passionate Monash Medical students travelling to India in December 2019 as part of TeamMED. Founded in 2009, TeamMED is a student-led not-for-profit organisation that provides Monash University students with opportunities to experience and contribute to global health through educational trips.

We will be working with vulnerable people in the Himachal Pradesh region of North India, delivering a health promotion program focused on mental health and drug and alcohol abuse in December 2019. Our program will be delivered to high-school students and vulnerable community members, especially women and children, with the help of a local non-profit organisation the Chinmaya Organisation for Rural Development (CORD), who TeamMED has been working alongside since 2016. Since 1985, CORD has serviced the area with the goal of promoting independence and self-sufficiency in the community.

We hope to raise funds for medical equipment and to support the continued implementation of health awareness and education projects in the regions we will visit. By doing so, we hope this will reduce the burden of mental health, alcohol and drug abuse in India and increase the life-expectancy and quality of life.

Any donations we receive will NOT be spent on any personal expenses such as flights, accommodation or living expenses. These items will be entirely self-funded.
