The ISSUE Foundation was created in 2010 by a group of medical students from the University of Tasmania (UTAS), who wanted to improve healthcare access & education in Uganda. Through working with the community, students provide cheap and sustainable preventions and education to make lasting changes.
Fundraising occurs throughout the year. At the end of the year a small group of students self-fund trips to Uganda, providing much needed healthcare support. In the past, we have been able to provide everything from mosqutio nets to dental chairs to buildings – it all depends on the needs of the community.
The ISSUE Foundation was created to empower students to make a difference on a global scale – the ‘International Society for Student Unity and Empowerment’ (ISSUE) Foundation.
The need for adequate healthcare education & facilities is abundant in Uganda, and the huge lack of access to relatively cheap measures such as insecticide-treated nets and HIV testing means that costs quickly add up. With 35% of the population unable to even access an insecticide-treated mosquito net, almost 20,000,000 suspected cases of Malaria per year and 50,000 new HIV infections every year (World Health Organization, Malaria Statistics, 2018), it is vital that the outreach of our program is as large as possible – however, we need YOUR help to achieve this!
Over the Christmas break, a group of UTAS students will usually travel to Masaka, Uganda, to address the health problems most important to the community. Staples of our campaign include providing quick and free HIV testing and counselling, supplying the community with insecticide-treated mosquito nets to help reduce the incidence of malaria, and implementing education programs regarding disease, sexual health and family planning.
However we also engage in open discussion with the community, and work to address their most important needs. In recent years, the need for a classroom and a library became apparent, and generous donations allowed us to assist the community in building these structures. The maintenence of these facilities is one of our ongoing projects. Other needs such as dental services in rural communities and the provision of microscopes to speed up diagnosis of infectious diseases have also been contributions of pervious trips to Uganda.
For us to be able to make a long-lasting impact, we need adequate funds to ensure we are not just helping the community now, but setting them up for a better future where they can take charge of their own health in a holistic manner. “Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime” (Chinese proverb).
We would love to have you on board! HIV testing and counselling costs us $1 per person, and insecticide-treated mosqutio nets $5 each, thus every donation is invaluable to our campaign. We help fund events through grants and we self-fund our own travel expenses, so every single cent that you donate goes directly to helping save and improve lives. Thank you!
