beyondblue provides information and support to help everyone in Australia achieve their best possible mental health, whatever their age and wherever they live.

An average of eight Australians take their own lives every day.

In Australia, suicide is the leading cause of death for males and females aged between 15 and 44.

Every year more than 62,000 people attempt to take their own lives.

For those making a living from the land, there is some evidence to suggest that the farm environment is hazardous to mental health, with farmers experiencing high rates of stress and depression. In Australia, male farmers die by suicide at rates significantly higher than the general population and non-farming rural males.

Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia. On average, 1 in 4 people – 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men – will experience anxiety.

On average, around 1 in 6 women and 1 in 8 men will experience some level of depression.

Nearly three million Australians live with depression and/or anxiety, which affect their wellbeing, personal relationships, career and productivity.

Mental health affects everyone. You may not be personally affected at this very minute but theres a very good chance we all know someone who has taken their own life or someone who is or has suffered from depression/anxiety and other debilitating illnesses at some point in their life.

So often however it is swept under the rug and not talked about.

Since 2000, beyondblue has been working to reduce the impact of depression, anxiety and suicide by supporting people to protect their mental health and to recover when they are unwell; reduce people’s experiences of stigma and discrimination; and improve people’s opportunities to get effective support and services at the right time.

The number of people contacting beyondblue’s Support Service has been going up at the rate of around 40% a year.

In 2014/15, Support Service counsellors responded to more than 150,000 people in need of someone to talk to and practical advice. Almost 95,000 people made contact by phone, 45,000 chose web chat and 10,000 sent emails.

In the same year, 4.6 million people visited beyondblue.org.au, up from 2.8 million people the previous year.

Louise Crosbie and Eliza Allan are both veteran Mongol Derby competitors (Guiness World Record Longest Toughest Horse Race – 1000km in a maximum of 10 days) and Eliza has also completed the whole Bicentennial National Trail (a 5330km trail down Eastern Australia).

On a flight home from Mongolia while looking for ‘the next big thing’ they decided to ride from Eliza’s home near Denmark to Louise’s place in Cardup, WA. Having personally known people who have taken their own lives and having seen close friends lose family members to suicide they decided why not try and help make a difference.

Accompanied by Denise Crosbie and Ben Watson, the 4 riders and 5 horses (one will be a pack horse) will ride the nearly 500km with no support vehicle – while raising money to support mental health.

The ride will leave Denmark on the 22nd September 2018.

What an awesome effort by Louise Crosbie & her friends. Making the commitment to a long ride unsupported is seriously admirable. Using it to raise funds for such a good cause even more so.
