Luu is 5 years old. She lives in undeniable poverty in a remote village in Nothern Vietnam with her mother, father and siblings. Luu suffers from advanced hydrocephalus.
When Little Feather Foundation first met Luu in 2016 she was experiencing many of the uncomfortable, and sometimes painful symptoms that come with having a neurological condition. As well as being severely malnourished Luu was facing being placed into an orphanage as her family were struggling to care for her.
Since then, the nurses of Little Feather Foundation have regularly visited Luu to provide treatment for her symptoms as well as offering support and education for Luu’s family on how to care for her effectively. Luu now has a nanny, paid for by Little Feather Foundation, who looks after Luu during the day allowing both her parents to work.
Whilst volunteering as a physiotherapist with Little Feather Foundation I was fortunate to be able to visit Luu at her home earlier this year. Seeing, first hand, the care that Luu receives from her family, supported by her nanny, was wonderful. However, it has taken time, education and the provision of a high calorie, nutritious diet, comfort items (such as blankets to keep warm and a memory foam pillow to prevent pressure sores) all from Little Feather Foundation to get to this stage. Life for Luu’s family is a constant balancing act. People living in Vietnam do not recieve monetary benefits from the government to support the costs of caring for a child with a complex medical condition. Her parents need to work to earn an income to provide their family’s basic needs and they cannot do this without help to care for Luu.
Giving up alcohol for five months is a small sacrifice for me, but I will be honest, it’s not going to be an easy one! I do enjoy a glass of wine or a gin and tonic quite frequently, so this WILL be a challenge! If you can help spur me on whilst supporting Luu and her family, through Little Feather Foundation, then I would greatly appreciate it. I might also buy you a drink once I complete the five months sobriety in Decemeber!
The costs per month for supporting Luu are as follows:
£85 pays the wage for a nanny to look after Luu during the day
£105 pays for special milk formula which provides extra nutrients for Luu
£15 provides community support and a translator
£5 for Luu’s medications
£60 travel costs for nurses to visit Luu
£5 for fresh vegetables from the market and pureed baby food for Luu
The total cost to Little Feather Foundation is £275 per month and I would love to be able to raise £550 to cover two months care.
Little Feather Foundation is run entirely by volunteers, therefore, all money raised will go directly to supporting Luu and her family. Thank you.

What an ace thing to do Fiona. If I’d known this on the day of the afternoon tea I’d have spent less on alcohol and more on this. Or maybe you did tell me….
