Top Surgery is something a lot of trans masculine pursue as part of their transition. For me, it will be the final step of my medical transition – I have been on HRT for over two years, and got a total hysterectomy in June this year. Top surgery, for me, is the last thing I need for my body to align with my mind and identity.

I had another fundraiser running in 2017 through YouCaring, which was unfortunately swallowed by GoFundMe, a company with values that go against my own. When this happened, I decided that rather than continuing that fundraiser through GoFundMe, I would do my own research and find a crowdfunding platform that worked best for me. It’s really hard to find a platform as good as YouCaring, which didn’t charge either organisers or donors any extra fees. I’ve decided on Chuffed because it has a very low additional cost for donors, which is explained here.

The goal for this fundraiser is $2000, which is about 40% of what my surgery will cost with the health insurance policy my fiancée and I have scraped together for. If by some miracle I reach this goal, I plan to extend the goal by another $1000.

I’m Oli, the person running this campaign and also the person who will hopefully be getting top surgery when the goal is reached. I’ve set the goal lower than the actual amount for top surgery in SA because I’m saving every cent of my own income that I can as well, to reach my goal sooner. I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Psychology and Sociology and working on a community project, Rainbow Disability SA.

I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) which makes it hard for me to work full or part time, which in turn makes it more difficult for me to raise the money for my transition, and is part of what pushed me to take the crowdfunding route. CFS also means that if you reach out to me, I might take a day or two to get back to you, because if I’m not doing too great, even things like replying to emails or messages can take up two or three spoons that I really have to save for things like eating and bathing. So please, don’t take it personally if I don’t reply swiftly; I almost definitely appreciate your concern or interest, I just have limited energy and have to conserve it wherever possible.
