Hiking the Heysen for Cancer

In 2009 my lovely Mum, Christine Frances Birrell passed away after a 12 month battle against gall-bladder cancer. In 2015, my good mate Kim Sutton’s Dad Tony Sutton also passed away from gall bladder cancer. It’s a fast acting and terrifying disease and unfortunately too many of us are affected by cancer in some way.

In 2015, after lots of chatting with Kim, we decided we would like to do something big to raise money for cancer… and we have been doing it, bit by bit. Our lofty goal was to walk the Southern section of the Heysen Trail- 600km! We gave ourselves a timeframe of 3 years to do this…. and believe it or not, last weekend, I managed to complete my goal! I hiked the last 30km through sunshine and sleet, along dusty roads and up a mountain with 3 great friends to achieve my goal. Kim is still trucking along towards on her goal (she has taken a hiatus, travelling around Australia with her family). We completed over half of the hiking together and the rest I completed with my Dad Ray, my partner Chris and many other amazing friends.

The money we raise from this campaign will go to Cancer Council SA, an amazing organisation that works to assist those with Cancer and their families. Additionally, $550 has already been donated to Pallative Care, Broken Hill for the organisation’s unforgetable work in supporting people like my Mum.

I’m aiming to raise $2000 and I need your help to do that! Please donate to this worthy cause. Kim and I are expecting to go on and try and finish the rest of the Heysen over the next three years, so watch this space!
