From the lowest trough to the highest peak – what a difference a year can make!

This time last year Darragh didn’t think he would see another Christmas. He was in advanced stages of Cystic Fibrosis, in respiratory failure, and awaiting a double lung transplant. Life had become exceptionally difficult for him and consisted of an endless routine of relentless medications and hospital admissions. He relied on 24 hour oxygen to get around. Simple everyday tasks, like walking, talking and even tying his shoe laces had become insurmountable challenges. It was terrifying to watch. Then an incredible gift from an extraordinary person changed the course of Darragh’s life forever. In the summer of 2017, he received a lifesaving double lung transplant thanks to the indescribable generosity, compassion and selflessness of his donor and their family. A complete stranger and their family saved Darragh’s life. From the moment he woke up in the Mater ICU, his life had changed beyond all recognition. Now he is determined to give something back to show his eternal appreciation for the life saving gift he received. This June he plans to hike the highest mountain in Ireland to raise much needed funds for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and The Mater Heart and Lung Transplant Unit and to encourage everyone to carry an Organ Donor Card.
