Macy’s Fight Against GACI Macy is a gorgeous baby girl with the most perfect smile.
On Monday the 9th April, Macy was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Royal Children’s Hospital in cardiogenic shock, with an enlarged heart. She was intubated (placed on a breathing machine), and after several tests Macy’s parents, Kate and Jason, received the news that she has an incredibly rare genetic condition known as GACI (Generalised Arterial Calcification of Infancy, also called IIAC- Idiopathic Infantile Arterial Calcification). Macy’s parents were initially told that nothing could be done to save her and they prepared to lose their first and incredibly precious child.
Macy fought unbelievably hard that night to defy the odds and continue living and her fight has so far paid off. The doctors were able to find a medication (Pamidronate, a type of Bisphosphonate) that is believed can reverse the calcification in the arteries and has shown promising results in other children. Macy has started this treatment, which is said to possibly take 4-6 weeks to start working, but she remains unwell in ICU. Her heart has been severely damaged as a result of the restricted blood flow to the muscle which has serious implications for her in the longer term.
While Jason and Kate are fortunate enough that treatment at the Royal Children’s Hospital is covered, it is possible that with ongoing treatment in the future, not all expenses will be covered. A lot of people have been asking what they could do to help during this tough time, so we decided to set up a fundraiser for those that wish to make a financial contribution as a way to show their support. The donations will go into a fund until the time calls for its use where the first option would be to help Macy in her recovery. A best case scenario includes a long road ahead in hospital and expenses may include specialised equipment, therapy, etc.
As we are unsure at this time exactly what she will need, all funds raised in excess of what is necessary for Macy’s care will be donated. Donations would be made to The Royal Children’s Hospital and/or other organisations involved with GACI or congenital heart disease as a gesture of Macy’s, Kate’s, Jason’s and all supporter’s appreciation for the high level of care provided.
Kate and Jason wish to thank everyone that has already shown tremendous support in many different ways. They have felt a lot of love coming from so many people, which has all been a big help in Macy’s fight. As Macy does… keep smiling.
